“If,” Adrian repeated. “Just because we’re connected in some way…” his voice trailed off as if he wasn’t sure of what else to say.

“I think we both know you’re going to help me,” I said.

He sighed again, then made a dismissive gesture. “Tell me everything.”

Even though we weren’t alone, I wanted to fuck him again and fuck him for hours. I wondered if he was feeling the same way about me. My cock stirred, so I shifted to keep it hidden… hopefully. I knew Nadia and Shi could sense my arousal, but they kept it to themselves and that was good. In any case, the attraction I felt for Adrian was more than just attraction. It was desire, longing, and everything in between and above. Iwantedhim! I needed him. That much I knew and I was going to do my best to make that happen. For now, I’d play it smooth.

“Fine.” I sat down in the chair again. Adrian had taken the seat on the other side of his desk, leaving the other chair free until Shi sat down in it. “I’ll tell you.”

CHAPTER SEVEN

“I’m a business man, first and foremost,” Sage said, and I had to focus on him in an abstract way and not on his lips that were sheer perfection or his gorgeous features that bewitched me whenever I looked at him. I shouldn’t feel the desire I felt for him… not a man like him. Business man, my ass. One of the reasons I was sitting behind my desk was to hide the erection that was tenting my pants. I think I gave Xavier enough of a show the last time Sage and I were in this office. Best to keep it in my pants… for now, at least. I hoped. Good lord, why did he make me feel this way?

“A business man?” Xavier asked, cocking a knowing eyebrow.

Sage nodded. “First and foremost,” he repeated.

“And a shifter, I’m just not sure which kind. You all are,” I said, looking at the two very intimidating females with him. “You mentioned you lived with a pride.” All feline shifter species called their families “prides”. Cheetahs, leopards, tigers, and lions all lived in prides.

He nodded. “Lion.”

That explained a lot, not to mention, lion shifters were a rare breed. They were also the most arrogant with wolves coming in a close second. The more common shifters were wolves, bears, coyotes, and leopards. Lions, tigers, cheetahs, and hyenas were the exception. I wondered if Sage was the only male in his pride.

“And?” I knew there was more to him than being a business man and shifter.

He licked his lips. Oh God, those were lips I wanted all over me. I didn’t feel the heat I’d felt the first time we’d met. But my body was heating up thinking about having Sage inside of me. I felt a thirst for him I knew only he could quench. Would everyone think I was a slut if I just kicked them all out of the office and hopped onto Sage’s lap to ride him like a bull at a rodeo?

Stay Focused, Adrian.

“I’m part of an organized family,” Sage said.

“You’re mafia,” Xavier pointed out, stripping away all the flowery talk.

Sage turned to him. “I am.” He looked at me. “But you figured as much before, didn’t you? It’s the reason why you refused my case.”

I nodded. “I had suspected.” I ran my fingers through my hair. “Do you have any idea who wants you dead?”

“My first thought and still on the menu is a griezel, a vampire, or the leader of another shifter family. Or even another mafia outfit trying to muscle in on my turf. We now know about the other mages, so that’s a new enemy. Whatever the case, they are using magic to break through my defenses.”

“I need to be able to look through this book…” I paused and looked up at Sage. “We need to look through it to find a spell that might help us,” I said, not wanting to seem like I wanted to hoard the book, which I kind of did want to do. I’d only skimmed through it just to see what was different. But the fact of the matter was, we needed to read every page, because we both saw different things when we looked at it. And then there were those spells that were obviously meant for both of us to use.

“So, you want me to leave the book with you?” Sage asked.

“Do you trust me with it?” I asked him.

“I can sense the book, so I think I will always know where to find it,” he said.

I nodded, because I too could sense the book. It was as if there was an invisible string tying me to the book. “Maybe we should both study it today.”

“What about our plans to go to the house?” Xavier asked.

I hissed. “Oh shit, you’re right.”

“The house?” Sage asked, one perfect eyebrow arched, and those gray eyes of his so intense and alluring at the same time. I could just stare into those orbs of his for eternity.

“I’m on a case of my own. I don’t know if you heard about this, but there was a double murder yesterday. The child was missing when the bodies of her parents were discovered. Thing is, I knew them. I had saved their daughter last week from a sick bastard who had wanted to use the child to be the vessel of a demonic spirit.”

“You think he was successful?” Sage asked me.
