“So, how do we get past the cops?” Xavier asked.

“Go around the back?” Shi suggested.

“Or, I can do a spell that would put them to sleep.”

“I didn’t know you could do that,” Xavier said, both eyebrows raised in surprise.

“I couldn’t before. I can now. It’s a simple spell, too. I managed to read it in the book,” I offered.

“This book… I need you to really break it all down for me. Where did it come from?” Xavier asked.

“If I’m to take the visions I saw as our legacy, then it came from our ancestors. Sage’s and mine. It was meant for us to have it.”

“Yeah, I just… I don’t know… I’m concerned for you,” Xavier worried.

“Sage wouldn’t hurt him,” Shi said, but there was a bit of acid in her tone as she felt insulted that Xavier didn’t like her King and mob boss.

“I don’t know what Sage would or wouldn’t do,” Xavier retorted.

“No, you don’t, so perhaps you shouldn’t make speculations.” Shi gave him a cold look, one that could freeze fire.

“Hey, I didn’t make speculations. You’re the one who said he wouldn’t hurt him,” Xavier shot back.

“Because you’re acting like Sage is a threat to him,” Shi replied.

“Even if he isn’t, his world is,” Xavier stated.

Shi growled a real animalist growl. “You listen to me—”

“Look, can we focus on one thing here?” I said, once again getting in between Xavier and a shifter. “I’m going to put those cops to sleep, then we need to get inside the house and be quick in our investigation. Look for any details the police might have missed and all of the details they caught. We need to find out where Lacey is.” I looked at both of them and they nodded. I reached into Xavier’s glove compartment and pulled out three pairs of shoe coverings and latex gloves. I gave one set to Xavier, then turned to hand Shi a pair, but looked down at her heels. “I guess you won’t be needing these,” I said, tossing the shoe covering back into the box. “Here,” I said, handing her the gloves at least.

“Do you know a spell that can make us invisible so it’ll be easier to sneak in?” Shi asked as she slipped the gloves on her hands.

I shook my head. “Not yet, but I can’t wait until I learn.”

“We need to take something personal of hers for you to use your magic on,” Xavier reminded me.

I nodded. “I’ll do that.” I climbed out of the car and began walking toward the squad car with the two cops inside. The spell I was going to use was simple, but very effective. Would give us at least an hour. I could l feel that my power had increased. I felt the magic in the air all around me and as I tapped into it, it was like little electric charges flowing through my being. It gave me energy and made me feel invincible. It also made me aroused and the thought of my cock growing hard made me think of Sage. Damn it, why did my mind go to him? Stay focused, Adrian. You’ve got some cops to knock the fuck out.

Lucky for me, the spell didn’t require me to get up close and personal. I didn’t have to blow any powder in their faces or anything. I got close to the back of the squad car and touched the trunk. “Sleep,” I said, channeling my magic through my palm and into the car. Before they could react to my presence, I saw both men slump in their seats, passed out. I moved up along the side to make sure. Yep, out cold. I then wiped my palm print off their car and motioned for Xavier and Shi to join me.

The three of us snuck around the back of the house. I put on my protection gear, then we entered through the back door. Immediately, the scent of blood assailed our nostrils and I had to hold my breath for a few seconds to get used to the coppery smell. The scent was so strong, I knew there must have been a lot of blood. And as we made our way into the living and dining rooms where the murders had taken place, I was right. There was blood all over the walls and the carpet was still soaked in it.

“Be careful where you step,” I warned, even though I figured I really didn’t need to.

“The last thing I want to do is step in any evidence,” Xavier said as he made his way past me.

We spread out and started looking around. I watched as Shi sniffed the air, even bending low to catch scents, her nostrils flaring a little each time. “Find anything?” I asked.

She nodded. “I scent the three family members, but one of the scents is off.”

“Off? How?”

“I’ll let you know,” she said, then she walked away, making her way upstairs.

I held my hands out before me, using my newly acquired magic to see if I could sense anything otherworldly. I prayed I wouldn’t find anything other than human on human crime, but the tingling in my fingertips told me otherwise. The supernatural was at work here. I thought I knew why Shi had said the scent she smelled was off. The place had been scanned pretty good by the police. I didn’t see anything that they had missed. Of course, the fact that these murders weren’t committed by a human would be a detail they couldn’t possibly know because the existence of the supernatural was unknown to most humans.

I decided to go upstairs and look around, and I found Shi in Lacey’s bedroom where the vibe I’d sensed downstairs was a bit stronger. “What do you sense?” I asked her.
