“Just don’t get us into a car accident,” Sage joked.
Xavier was sitting in the passenger seat up front with her, and Jewel and Lacey were in the back with Sage and I. I laid my head on Sage’s shoulder, loving the feel of his strength. He kissed the top of my head and I closed my eyes. I needed to feel this sense of peace after the night I’d had. The sun would be up in a few hours, but I was sure it wouldn’t matter when my head finally hit that pillow.
“Stop!” Sage yelled and Shi slammed on the brakes.
We all had to brace ourselves from the force of her braking so hard even with seatbelts on.
“What’s wrong?” I asked him.
“I feel… I feel,” Sage didn’t finish his thought before he grabbed my hand, and I sensed him drawing power from me, then he raised his arm, shooting his power out in an invisible force shield right before a yellow blast of energy struck our car, sending it back a few feet, but it didn’t damage us. “We’re under attack,” Sage snarled.
“Fucking hell,” Xavier snapped.
“Stay inside,” Sage ordered.
“Where are you going?” I asked.
“To kill whomever threatens our lives,” he snapped, then he opened the car door. “Get her out of here. Get her to the police station. She doesn’t need to be a part of this.”
“I’m going with you,” I said, then climbed out after Sage.
“Adrian!” Xavier yelled.
“Get Lacey out of here now!” I snapped.
When another blast came our way, both Sage and I deflected it with our magic, sending the blast back to its conjurer. Shi did as she was commanded and took off, getting Lacey to safety. The poor child had begun screaming and crying, not knowing what was going on. She didn’t need to suffer any more attacks, that was for sure.
“Show yourself, you piece of shit!” Sage yelled. “You fucking cowards!”
I stood beside him, ready to take on whoever was trying to kill us.
Sage held his hand up and a ball of fire formed. I held my hand out to form an energy ball that glowed white in my palm. Thank God we had been able to study some basic defensive and offensive magic since putting our grimoire together. Ever since Sage walked into my office that day, I’d felt like I hadn’t had a chance to catch my breath. To say that life was a bit exhilarating at the moment would be an understatement. I was looking forward to it being boring again.
Sage whispered something into his ball of fire, then he sent it off. And the flame raced through the air as if it had purpose. When another yellow blast came at us from another direction, I released the energy ball I’d conjured and the two balls of magic collided, creating a blast that ended in sparks. There was a cry in the darkness, a man wailing in agony.
“Got him,” Sage said triumphantly, then raced off faster than I could see using his shifter and vampire speed.
Another blast came my way, and I defended myself with my magic barrier and countered with several blasts of my own until I heard a female scream. I followed the sound of whimpering until I came upon a woman with red hair crawling away from me. Her clothes had been singed by my energy blasts and she was badly burned over several areas of her exposed skin. I had no idea who this woman was, but I knew she was a mage.
Before I could get closer, Sage was already on her, lifting her off the ground, her feet kicking. His fangs were bared, eyes glowing gold with rage. I was frozen in place as this was a part of him I’d not yet witnessed. He held her with one hand by her throat and lifted her in the air.
“Why are you trying to kill us?” he growled. Too bad mages couldn’t be hypnotized by vampires, and neither could other supernals. Thank goodness, because there would be no stopping them if they could. Still, in this situation, it was unhelpful, that handicap.
“You will… find out… soon,” she said through gasping breaths.
“How many are there of you?” Sage asked.
“We… failed… others… won’t,” she whispered.
“There are other ways of getting the information I want,” Sage snarled and then struck, burying his fangs into her neck. She cried out… at first… then she looked like she was enjoying his feeding. Her body shook with pleasure before she went limp. Sage pulled away, licking his lips, then tossed her over his shoulder before walking over to me.
It was good the area we’d been attacked in was in the shady part of town that happened to have a lot of abandoned stores. The less eyes to witness our magic on display, the better.
“Is she dead?” I asked him.
He shook his head. “Not yet. We still need her alive. There is a spell I want to try. One I think might help us take down this clan that is trying to kill us, because it looks like they know about you, too. At least we know it’s not a rival mafia wanting my territory.”
“Did you get that info from the other one?” I asked.
