“Where are you going?” I sit up and set my Kindle on the coffee table.
“I’m going on a sexcation.”
“A what?” I know I didn’t hear her correctly.
“A sexcation.” She repeats. “I’m going to one of those adult swingers' islands, where I’m going to have sex with who I want, when I want, and with however many I want.”
“Wait just a minute, Blair.” I reach for her arm and gently pull her down on the couch next to me, her suitcase making a loud thud when it hits the wooden floor. “Tell me what happened to make you decide to go on a…sexcation.”
“The three guys from the Commissioner’s Ball only want me when it’s convenient for them, like I’m some secret booty call they’re ashamed of in the daylight. When we’re around each other all day, they ignore me, but as soon as midnight hits, I get a text saying their driver is on his way to pick me up, like I’m some reverse Cinderella.”
“I’m sorry, Blair. I had no idea that was happening.” I put my arms around her, giving her a big hug. “Are you sure a sexcation is the best idea right now?”
“You know what they say, the best way to get over a guy is to get under or on top of or in front of other guys.”
I’m not sure that’s exactly how the saying goes, but I’m not going to correct Blair when she’s so upset.
“It will be okay.” I brush my hand over her hair and let her cry into my shoulder.
“I wish they’d just go back to Canada.” She says the words so faint that I almost don’t hear them.
“Come on. Let’s get you into the shower. We’ll order some pizza and watch a horror movie to get your mind off those jerks. Will call it a horcation.”
“I don’t think that came out the way you wanted it.” Her laugh warms my heart. She’ll get over her heartbreak in time, just like I did.
Blair falls asleep on her half of the couch after consuming half a large pepperoni and mushroom pizza, five boneless buffalo wings, and a liter of Pepsi during the climax scene of the original Friday the 13thmovie.
Not wanting to leave her alone just yet, I change the movie to The Nightmare Before Christmas and snuggle in to watch JackSkellington. But my phone buzzes before I get a chance to start the movie.
I stare at my flipped-over phone on the coffee table, knowing it can only be one of four people, I hesitate.
If it’s Felix or Ryker, I definitely want to talk to them. But if it’s Kai or Hudson, I’m not sure I can handle talking to them yet.
Curiosity gets the best of me, and I flip my phone over and sigh in relief.
Felix:Ready for our third date?
Me:Not tonight. I’m hanging out with my sister. She’s pretty messed up right now over some guys. I don’t want to leave her alone.
Ryker:No problem, Gorgeous. We’ll see you tomorrow at the game. Date number three to follow.
I smile at his confidence in me agreeing to a third day. He’s not wrong—just cocky.
Me:Since it’s my turn to pick what we do, how do you guys feel about musicals?
I laugh thinking about the two of them sitting through The Sound of Music or The Music Man, maybe even a little Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. I know those are pretty old, but I’m not a fan of musicals, so I have no idea what’s out there.
Felix:We’ll go wherever you go.
Me:See you tomorrow.
My phone vibrates again before I can set it back on the coffee table. Knowing it’s probably Felix or Ryker telling me goodbye, I shift the screen to my face.
Hudson:We’re playing the Poseidon tomorrow in Iowa. We know you’re one of the referees for the game. Will you please talk to us after the game?
Kai:Please.
My heart drops. There is no way I can meet them after the game. But I need closure.
