Max turned the movie back on and pretended to watch it for a while. His eyes were glazed like he was lost in thought somewhere I couldn’t reach him.
I let him stay lost in his head, hoping he’d come back to me soon while I thought over what we’d done. What I’d done to make him react like that.
After a while, the movie caught my attention and I began to watch it, absorbed in it to the point that I started when Max spoke.
“It’s late. I should go.”
“Okay, if you’re sure.”
I wasn’t getting answers soon, so I let him go with a promise of dinner the next night. Another date had to be a good thing, right? I couldn’t have messed things up that badly if Max would still kiss me goodbye and make another date.
As I lay in bed that night, the worries kept me from sleeping. I turned over the whole day, looking for clues and finding nothing.
