My anger was entirely directed at Asher. I really should have beat his head in until he was bleeding. He didn’t deserve a fucking spot on the team.
But until I could get my hands on him, I’d reserve all my anger for my opponents tonight.
They were gonna see hell.
Chapter 27
DAISY
Hockey was terrifying.
That was a fact I already knew prior to meeting Evan, but seeing him on the ice looking like he was absolutely taken over by rage had been intriguing to say the least. A big part of me was glad that the game was over. The Wolverines had won with ease, but it had been pretty wild on the ice, and I wasn’t sure how I’d handle seeing Evan play another game of hockey.
During the game it looked as if Evan had slammed just about everyone into the boards, sending them flying right back. He had been moving with a purpose – much more than the last time I had seen him play. When I had talked to him in the morning he had seemed his usual self: so warm and welcoming. But he was entirely different out there on the ice. After watching him play, all I could think about was how he possessed so much power, so much fire, so muchintensity.
It had been scary and fascinating all at once.
My hands pulled at the hem of the blue jersey I had on. It was an old one apparently – one Evan wore when he played hockey in high school. He had given it to me in the morning and told me to wear it to the game. It was so long on me, the hem almost at my knees. But it was comfortable and felt so warm, even as I leaned up against the brick wall outside the locker room. Evan had told me to meet him out there when the game was over with. He’d be driving me to my dorm before he went back to his place. We could have just walked, but all his gear would have made the fifteen-minute journey a little awkward.
“Watcha thinking about?” Sasha suddenly appeared beside me. She was waiting for Hudson too. A few of the other girlfriends had already left with their guys.
I shook my head. “Oh. N-Nothing. Just… Evan seemed kinda crazy out there on the ice tonight.”
Sasha’s eyes widened. “Oh, I was thinking the same thing. He’s rough on the ice, but he’s usually not that bad. Something must have got under his skin. Did you guys have a fight?”
“N-No. N-Nothing like that.”
“Huh. Maybe he just hated the other team that bad. Their mascot was pretty annoying. Why’d he have to keep dancing like that?”
I let out a soft laugh. “Yeah, m-maybe.”
There was some movement to my side, and my heart raced when I saw Evan standing there. Duffel bag in hand, he looked me up and down, a darkness in his eyes. His hair was a little wet, probably from his shower. But that cool water must not have done anything to ease his anger, because he still looked like he was ready to shove another guy into the boards. Was he still worked up from the game? Or maybe I had done something to make him angry without even knowing it.
“Hi,” I said quietly. “Are you okay? The game was… intense.”
Evan just sucked in a sharp breath.
“Are you ready to go?” I asked.
But my heart went from racing to stopping when I saw who came out of the locker room next. Asher. I pressed myself up against the wall, feeling a wave of nerves rush over me as he eyed me close. Evan suddenly stepped in front of me. He was so big and tall that I couldn’t even see Asher anymore. I was so thankful for that. Evan stayed put, only turning around once Asher had disappeared down the hall.
“Yeah, I’m ready,” Evan told me lowly. “Let’s go.”
Giving Sasha a wave goodbye, I let Evan grab my hand. He lead us out of the rink and over to his car. He opened up the door for me before throwing his gear in the trunk, and when he got settled next to me in the driver’s seat, he placed a hand on my thigh.
“You’re the only thing I could think about tonight,” Evan said, his voice all gravelly and his eyes still clouded with darkness.
“Are you m-mad at me?” I whispered. “Did I do something?”
Evan frowned. “Mad at you?”
“You seem angry. M-Maybe I did something. I’m s-sorry if I did…”
“Oh, sweetheart.” Evan placed both hands on the sides of my face, guiding me into a heated kiss. It was deep and long, his tongue tangling with mine as he practically pulled me into his lap. “I could never be mad at you,” he said when he moved away from me just that little bit. He pressed his forehead to mine, his skin all warm.
I gave him a little shrug. “It just feels like something is on your m-mind.”
“I had a talk with Murph earlier,” he said. “He’s pissed at me for hurting Asher. But I explained why I did what I did.”
