The sound of the horn suddenly met my ears and I let my body go a little limp, letting relief hit me. The game was over.
That was… stupid. I never got caught up on girls. Especially girls that didn’t like me.Especiallygirls I hadn’t even done anything with. It might have made sense if me and Daisy had some history. Maybe if I had kissed those pretty lips. Hell, if we had fuckinghuggedor something.
But none of that happened.
Especially the first one.
Spitting out my mouthguard, I quickly made my way back to the locker room. That had been a shitty game on my part. Thankfully we got lucky. Tanner was especially helpful in the net. I expected a punch on the arm from him later for my awful performance. Coach Murphy – or Murph as me and the boys liked to call him – was gonna get mad too. Fuck, at least we won.
I hit the showers as soon as I could, avoiding the celebration in the locker room. Even with the cold water pouring over my body, my brain was still occupied with Daisy. She hated me. She really did. I would never treat her the way Asher did, but me and him being such good friends definitely didn’t help ease any of that hatred she had for him.
I hissed loudly, letting more of the water hit me.
She was so pretty, too…
Thick, chocolate brown locks that looked so smooth and silky. Permanently tanned skin. The biggest, prettiest eyes I had ever fucking seen.
I wanted to know what had gone down with her and Asher. There was no way she just thought she was better than athletes or whatever shit he had told me the other day. She didn’t seem like the type to act like that, and that night at the mixer showed me a side of Asher I had never seen. The side that fucking took joy in humiliating her in front of a crowd. She didn’t deserve that. No one did.
I finally left the shower and got changed. Why the hell did Asher have to do that to her? Make her feel bad? Make her fucking cry? And make fun of her fucking stutter as well, like she had any control over that? I didn’t mind her stutter. Not even a little bit.
My eyes landed on Asher a meter or so away from me. He was already changed, in the middle of a conversation with Tanner. I didn’t get a chance to give him shit the other night for what he did. When I got back to the mixer after talking to Daisy he had already taken off. He had probably been busy with Brie. We had been busy pre-game too, but I finally had the chance to zero in on him.
“What the hell was that the other day?” was the first thing I said to Asher, towering over him. He was a tall guy, but at six foot four, I was always the bigger one.
Asher frowned. “What?”
“Don’t act fucking dumb,” I snapped, ignoring the wide-eyed look on Tanner’s face. “That shit with Daisy.”
“What shit with Daisy?”
“You know what I’m talking about,” I insisted. “You made Brie go up to her and fuck with her after you already pulled that shit at the mixer.”
Asher suddenly broke out into a grin. “Yeah, and? So what? I love making that bitch cry.”
It happened before I could control myself. I grabbed Asher by the collar of his shirt, slamming him right up against the closest wall. I watched as he winced, but the sight of him being hurt just made the anger in me grow. He didn’t have a right to feelanykind of pain after humiliating Daisy like that.
“Hey, relax,” Tanner spoke up. “What the fuck?”
“Don’t call her that,” I said lowly, glaring at Asher. “And stop treating her like fucking shit. Like that stunt at the party the other night. Is that what you did to her in high school? Huh? Is that why she hates you so much?”
The other guys had quickly moved in closer, getting a front row seat to whatever the hell was going down with me and Asher. Nobody said a thing – the boys knew not to fuck with me when I was mad. They also knew me and Asher had been friends since we were kids. Weneverfought. Not over serious stuff, anyway. But I wasn’t about to sit back and let Asher walk all over Daisy.
“What, are you in love with her or something?” Asher was struggling, trying to push away from the wall. But I was stronger. “It was a fuckingjoke, Evan.”
“It wasn’t funny.”
“I fucking laughed.”
“That’s ‘cause you’re an asshole,” I said clearly. “From now on, you don’t do anything like that to her again. Might be easier and better for you if you just stayed away from her.”
“Or what?”
“Or I do this again and again until you learn to back off.” My teeth were gritted, my hands tightening on Asher’s shirt. “Maybe she felt like she couldn’t stand up to you in high school, but I sure as fuck will.”
There was a little bit of worry on Asher’s face. That look only lasted for a second, but I caught it. “What the hell did she tell you?”
I eyed him up and down. “She didn’t tell me anything.”
