“Well mind your own fucking business then!”

“Sheismy business.” Okay, she wasn’t. I knew that and she knew that and Asher knew too. Butfuck, I felt like she was. I just wanted to keep her safe. Especially after seeing what Asher had done to her. “So fucking stay away from her. Completely. You see her around campus? You walk the other way. You see her at a party? You fucking uninvite yourself and leave. Don’t talk to her anymore. Got it?”

Asher grunted and rolled his eyes. When he said nothing, I pushed him up against the wall that little bit harder.

“I’ll leave her alone!” he let out. “Just get your hands off me.”

Hudson was suddenly in the room, still in his gear. “Hey, hey, hey.” He moved over to us fast. “What the hell are you two doing? Come on. Again? Really?”

I let Hudson put a hand on my shoulder, giving me a slow push back. But my eyes were on Asher the whole time. I had meant what I said. I didn’t want him anywhere near Daisy after what he had done to her.

“This asshole started it.” Asher gave me a sharp nod.

“Keep away from her and I won’t have to start anything again,” I muttered out.

Hudson eyed me closely, pushing me all the way to the other side of the room. As team captain, he had every right to be concerned. All the other guys looked just as confused as he did after witnessing our little show down.

“What the hell was that?” Hudson asked, his voice low so only I could hear him. “Why are my defensemen suddenly going at it all the time?”

“He deserved it,” was my simple answer.

“What the hell did he do?”

I didn’t know. Not really. I knew about the shit at the mixer and Daisy’s complete distrust for him. But it seemed like more than that. The first time Daisy saw Asher, she looked absolutely terrified. She seemed so damn scared that she literally ran right out of the house.

“That’s what I wanna know,” was the last thing I told Hudson before leaving the locker room.

Chapter 14

DAISY

“Did you hear about what happened after the game the other night?” Leena asked, her voice all rushed.

I shrugged, looking away from my ancient laptop to face her. We still had some time to talk before our class started. “What game?”

“The hockey game.”

“You know I don’t care about that stuff.” Whatever happened during or after or before the hockey game truly didn’t concern me.

“I know, I know.” Leena leaned in close. “But you’re gonnna wanna hear this. Apparently some of the Wolverines got into it post-game.”

“B-Because?”

“Because of a girl.”

“I feel b-bad for her,” I mumbled. “Poor thing.”

“I know. Apparently, Evan and your good friend Asher were arguing over her. Evan got in Asher’s face or something. Do you remember meeting Cassie at the mixer? She has a brother on the team, and she gave me all the details. Apparently, Asher was feelingutterlyhumiliated.”

My eyebrows furrowed as I stared at Leena. Evan and Asher got into a fight? That interested me. A lot. It shouldn’t have, but it did, and the only reason that it did was because I loved the idea of Asher feeling any sense of embarrassment. If Evan had well and truly made Asher feel even thetiniestbit of shame, then it was a good outcome.

“Wait, really?” I asked.

Leena nodded. “Yup. Maybe Evan isn’t so bad after all, huh? And looks like karma finally met up with Asher. I wish I could have seen the look on his face. What goes around comes around, right?”

“Yeah, I guess…” My voice trailed off into nothing. If karmawasreal, then Asher would be feeling that humiliation and self-loathing he made me experience every day of his life – not just during one little post-game moment. Butstill.

Professor Burnett suddenly appeared at the front of the room, a smile on his face as he got his laptop set up. I sat back in my chair, wondering what that fight between Evan and Asher could have been about. Maybe there wasn’t even a fight. Maybe it was all just a game of telephone that had spiralled out of control. But if itwastrue, then I had definitely missed out, because a big part of me wished I had been there to see the look on Asher’s face when he felt that supposed humiliation.
