Ah, shit. Here we go. The reveal. I knew who Holly’s dad was, but did he know who I was?

“The Wildcats?” Joe asked, making his payment.

“What about ‘em?”

“You go to Britton High?”

“Yeah. Why?” I was being direct, but only because I knew what kind of person I was talking to. He had already outed himself as an asshole.

“My daughter goes to Britton High,” he continued.

“Does she?” I got to work on writing his receipt, not in the mood to deal with whatever shit he was about to say.

“You may know her… Which, after this interaction, seems rather unfortunate.”

“Oh, unfortunate is correct,” I said with a laugh.

“What the hell does that mean?”

“I know your daughter. It’s been a real displeasure bein’ around her. Good job raising her.”

Joe cleared his throat. “You know Holly?”

“I wish I could say no.”

He huffed, looking down at the receipt. “Sawyer Westbrook, huh?” He read out my name at the bottom of the paper that acted as proof that I had accepted his payment.

“Mhm.” I snapped the receipt book shut, my heavy hands pressing into the counter.

“You’re the one who hurt Holly’s boyfriend last year,” he mumbled. “You sent him to the hospital. I thought they locked your ass up.”

I shot him a small grin. “Those were good times, huh?”

Joe sneered at me before turning around – finally about to leave – but then he gave me a look over his shoulder. “Stay away from my daughter, Sawyer.”

I scoffed at him, shaking my head. “Trust me, I already fuckin’ do that.”

He stayed silent as he pushed the door open, the sound of the bell rattling above him. I’d get someone else to get him his car. I didn’t want to get inthat thing knowing Holly had been there as well. Of course she got to ride around in a fancy fuckin’ Mercedes.

I still couldn’t forget our earlier interaction. She had looked at me pretty wide eyed. Maybe she was taken aback how I had acted. Good. She knew better then to fuck with me, to come intomyterritory and bat those eyes at me, acting all innocent.

And after talking to her dad, it was no wonder she was such an annoying pain in the ass.

Like father, like daughter.

Chapter 12

HOLLY

Sawyer Westbrook had no right infiltrating my brain, but he had always been a little too good at doing that and I was almost certain he knew that it was his best skill. The memories from the fight we had the other day kept lingering. Maybe it was my fault for just showing up out of nowhere, but I hadn’t been lying when I said I wanted Brodie to have his stuff back. Sawyer always seemed to believe every intention I had was bad, though. I felt guilty for stumbling upon him after he had been arguing with his dad. I hadn’t meant to overhear anything.

I blew out a long, frustrated breath and pulled open my locker, instantly spotting my reflection in the little mirror I kept attached to the door. I had just had a long discussion with the principal about helping to organize fundraising events for the football team, and I needed to think of something all the cheer girls would get on board with.

My hands fixed a couple flyaways before I grabbed my small tube of Dior lip gloss, letting the soft brush run across my lips.

“Hey!” a bright voice said from behind me.

My eyes widened when I saw Annie in my mirror, a little glint in her eyes. “Don’t sneak up on me when I’m putting lip gloss on.”
