With that confirmation, we headed out and hailed a cab. As we traveled to the next location, I noticed we weren’t far from the place I was currently renting. The Brooklyn Bridge came into view as we approached the building. It was much newer than the building we had just left. We were already moving in the right direction. This building was roughly twenty stories tall. I looked around and made a mental note of the homes and other structures that lined the block. This felt more residential than where I currently was.
The doorman of the building held the door open for us as we exited the cab.
“Good evening, ladies. Debby, it’s good to see you again,” the doorman greeted us.
Debby returned the pleasantry as we entered through the glass doors. The large glass chandelier in the lobby took my breath away. Everything about this building screamed luxury living. Debby led us to the elevator bank and hit the button for the fourteenth floor. Anticipation rose in my belly as we made our way up. Debby wore a sly smirk as we exited the elevator. She walked to the end of the hall to Unit 14P.
“Welcome to the penthouse suite,” she announced as we entered.
The view of the bridge took my breath away as soon as we entered. I took note of the double oven in the kitchen. Drawers hid the microwave with room for other appliances. The place also had a large pantry and plenty of cabinet space throughout. Next, I moved onto the primary bedroom. It was large enough for a king-size bed and had an en suite bathroom. I walked to the second bedroom and half bath then went out to the spacious patio area. While it wasn’t as large as my current rental, the view stole my heart yet again.
“What do you think? Did I get it right this time?” Debby inquired.
I smiled as I asked, “How soon can I move in?”
We shared a laugh. All the dread I felt about this process was quickly replaced with happiness. The idea of living here increased my excitement about this new journey.
Cleaning Out My Closet
My leasefor my new home was officially signed. Debby had earned her commission on this deal. She made the process quick and easy for me. I decided to call Jacob to share my good news. For once, I would be calling him with good news. I dialed his phone number, and he answered on the second ring.
“Hey, love. How’s your day going?” he answered.
“I just signed the lease on my new apartment, so my day is going amazing.” I gushed.
“That’s big, love. Congratulations on your new beginning. How are you feeling about the move?” he asked.
“You know, I feel so much better than I have been. The only thing I’m dreading is going back to my condo to get the rest of my things,” I admitted.
“When do you plan on doing that? I don’t want you going over there alone, especially not after what you told me about ole boy.”
Jacob’s concern for my well-being made me feel warm inside. He didn’t just say he cared. Jacob made a point to show me he cared.
“I was going to stop by today. I’m tired of buying clothes, so I’ll grab what I can. Whatever is left, I can hire movers, or Mason can throw them away. I just need to see what I have before I figure that out,” I explained.
“Let me drop Jada off at school, and then I’ll make my way to you,” he offered
“Aww, Jakey. See you in a few,” I replied as we disconnected the call.
Here I was ready to go alone. I appreciated Jacob not wanting me to face Mason on my own. While I needed my things, I was kind of nervous to come face to face with Mason.
While I waited for Jacob, I called the front desk of my condo. Before I headed over, I wanted to be sure Mason wasn’t there. I found the contact and dialed the number. After one ring, the call connected.
“Thank you for calling The Double. This is Austin speaking.”
I was glad it was Austin. He was one of the cool doormen.
“Morning, Austin. This is Mrs. Baxter,” I stated.
“Mrs. Baxter, good morning to you. What can I do for you?”
“Quick question for you. Has my husband left for work already?”
“Why, yes, Mr. Baxter left out twenty minutes ago,” he confirmed.
“Perfect. That was all I needed. Thanks,” I replied as I disconnected the call.
With that out of the way, I felt better about heading to the condo. Next, I ordered a car from the car service I usually traveled with. I also ordered a large truck to transport my things back with me. I scheduled the car to arrive in thirty minutes. Twenty minutes later, there was a knock at the door. As I opened the door, I was face to face with Jacob’s beautiful visage. He flashed his perfect smile then pulled me in for a hug. After he let me go, he kissed my forehead.
