Jacob just looked at her and shook her head. Jada’s mother might have passed, but she was surrounded by love. I was happy I had come along because I was initially going to have him take me home. This side of Jacob was another layer to add on to what I liked about him.

Jacob placed the order then went into the back of the house, leaving Jada and me on the couch.

“Do you want to watch a movie with me?” she asked.

“Sure,” I agreed.

“My favorite movie is the one with the talking pets, okay?” Jada stated.

“Okay,” I confirmed.

I sat back on the couch while she used the remote to turn on the movie. Jada took a seat next to me as the movie began. Jacob came out of the back with a T-shirt and a pair of sweats that he handed to me.

“I’m sure you want to change into something more comfortable,” he offered.

“Daddy, no talking while the movie is on, remember?” Jada chastised.

In a low whisper, I said, “I’ll change when the food gets here. Thank you.”

Jada stared at us sternly. Miss Thing didn’t play about her movie time.

Jada and I remained quietly seated on the couch until dinner arrived. Then she paused the movie to eat her monkey brains. Baby girl was quite the character.

Let’s Try This Again

Three MonthsLater

My morning had been crazy from the moment I set my purse down. The number of calls from potential clients waiting for me was wild. We were still receiving requests from the fashion show, and while I appreciated the business, it was a lot for me to handle. I just wrapped up a call with Bryce “Trigga” James, a Grammy award-winning rapper, who needed a stylist. I hadn’t styled anyone since the start of my career. When I mentioned this to Trigga, he wouldn’t take no for an answer. Trigga wanted me to design clothes for him and style him, even giving me a number I couldn’t refuse to work with him.

The contract with Trigga included some traveling. Between this opportunity and the others knocking down my door, I would be busy, so my mentorship with Louisa would be even more important. During the call with Trigga and his team, I decided I would train Louisa for the head designer role. That would allow me to have someone internally, and I wouldn’t need to look outside. I had a strong feeling that this deal with Trigga would lead to similar agreements for me.

Louisa knocked on my door for our daily meeting. Since our conversation after the fashion show, Louisa had loosened up around me. The nervous energy she previously exuded was nonexistent.

“Hey, is now a good time for us to meet?” she asked sweetly.

“It’s perfect, actually. Please come in and shut the door. I have some news to share,” I informed her.

Once Louisa was seated, I reviewed the details of my new role with Trigga.

“Oh my God! You are working exclusively with Trigga. He’s my favorite rapper in the world. You’re so lucky.” She gushed with excitement.

“Actually,we’relucky. An opportunity like this can lead to big things for all of us. If I need to travel with Trigga, will you be able to hold down the design team?” I asked her.

Louisa looked at me, confused. “Me? You want me to fill in for you when you aren’t around? Do you really think I could do that?”

“You would be an in-person point of contact for the team. We would communicate daily or several times a day if needed during our busy times. I would still have the final say on everything, but we will continue to work together. My goal is for you to feel comfortable being a resource to the team in my absence,” I explained.

“I can do that. I would love to be a resource to the team. Thank you for considering me,” Louisa said.

With that out of the way, we continued with our daily tasks. We were in full design mode on the fall line. In addition to that, we needed to work on some exclusive designs. Some of the department stores we would distribute in needed exclusive items. Then Trigga would need all new original pieces. Louisa and I had our usual two-hour meeting. At the end of our meeting, Louisa left as Milani made her way in.

“Hey, this came for you today. It’s certified mail, so it must be important,” she stated as she passed me the envelope and left the office.

I read the front, and the return address belonged to an attorney’s office. It was listed as Thomas & Thomas. Although hesitant to open it, I decided to see what the letter was about.
