Margaret breathed in heavily. “At this stage, I don’t know. I need to review the results of the investigations with the other trustees before we decide. The site won’t be opened until we can get some landscapers to fix the torn-up turf. It’s a bit of a health and safety nightmare out there. I suggest you go home for the rest of the day. I’ll call you to let you know the outcome as soon as I can.”
Anna nodded in agreement and navigated her way back to the bench outside in disbelief. Her chest was tightening, and her head was spinning. Luckily, Carrie was still there.
Carrie rose and crossed the grass to meet her. “Are you all right, Anna? You look like you did after you fainted. You haven’t had another episode, have you?”
Anna shook her head and reached out a hand to her. Carrie took it and led her to the bench.
Anna took some deep breaths and closed her eyes, trying to settle the panic she could feel rising inside.
“I… I didn’t… lock up properly.”
Carrie pushed her lips out and exhaled loudly. “Have they fired you?”
Anna shrugged. “She’ll call me.”
“Do you want me to run over and get Katherine?”
Anna shook her head. “She’ll only fuss.”
“Sit for a minute and I’ll walk you home.”
Anna nodded her agreement.
