As they watchedThe Bridge over the River Kwai, one of her father’s favourites, Anna lay tucked into Katherine, her head resting on her chest, lifting with every breath, but she struggled to get the conversation with Rebecca out of her mind. Surely it must have been some sort of test. The sound of light tapping on a keyboard came from the kitchen. Rebecca had begged off from watching the film, claiming a busy week ahead at work and a dislike for war movies.

Anna had an idea.

“I’m just going to get a glass of water.” She pulled herself away from Katherine, which gave her a whiff of her perfume.

“I can go if you want?”

“No, it’s fine. I don’t mind.”

She needed to clear the air with Rebecca; the last thing she wanted was for her to put doubts in Katherine’s mind because she didn’t like her girlfriend.

“You passed, if that’s what you’re worried about,” Rebecca said as soon as Anna had closed the door.

Anna rolled her eyes as she took a glass from the cupboard. How on earth did she know what she had been thinking? She was now on the back foot.

“You were saying something before Kat came out earlier,” Rebecca continued.

Anna stared out the kitchen window as water filled her glass. “I love her.”

“Have you told her that?” Rebecca asked, completely unfazed by Anna’s declaration.

“Of course not. It’s far too soon.” Anna took a sip of water and turned to face Rebecca.

Rebecca continued to type on her laptop, eyes still fixed on it. “Far too soon to express but not to feel.”

Anna observed her. “Something like that.”

Rebecca finally looked up from her laptop. “I’ve never really understood that notion.”

Anna approached the other side of the island and took Rebecca in as she stared back at her.

“Look, Anna, I’m sorry if I’m a bit abrupt about going about things. I love her too; I just want the best for her, and who knows? That might just turn out to be you. I hope it does.”

“I’m glad you approve,” Anna replied and returned to the warmth of Katherine.

Afternoon yawns led to talk of leaving. Anna regretted not bringing the wheelchair. She’d felt her dad could use the walk to Katherine’s but hadn’t considered being tired and very slightly heady from the champagne after.

To Anna’s surprise, Rebecca reached out and hugged her. “It was nice to meet you properly, Anna.”

“Likewise.” Anna hoped she had done enough to convince Rebecca she was worth it.

“Here, Harry, let me assist you out.” Rebecca held her arm out, and he took it gratefully.

Katherine placed her hands on either side of Anna’s face and kissed her. “Thanks for coming. I hope you liked Becks.”

“I’m sure I will — we have just met,” Anna reminded her. The jury was still out on that one. “Lunch was lovely. You really are a great cook. I’m looking forward to seeing where else your skills lie?”

Katherine opened her mouth to speak but then bit her bottom lip.

Anna winked at her as she blushed, and then stepped outside. Rebecca stood aside and Anna slowly guided her father down the drive.
