“I just get the feeling she doesn’t approve of me.”

“This has nothing to do with Rebecca. She’s an important part of my life, but I can make my own decisions.”

Anna felt the need to push the point. “You don’t deny she doesn’t approve of me.”

“She approves of you, more than you could realise.”

Anna moved closer to her. “Perhaps we could slow things down a little? Did we rush into playing happy families? Did I do something wrong?”

Katherine shook her head and took a small step towards Anna but stopped.

It’s not you, you could never do any wrong. I’m just…”

“Not ready.”

Katherine nodded. “I’m sorry.”

“Will you stop apologising?”

Anna didn’t know what to feel. She was heartbroken, but if Katherine wasn’t as ready as she had thought she was, then Anna couldn’t be angry at her for that.

“Will you still be Dad’s doctor?” She held her breath for the response, she wasn’t sure if she would be able to cope if they had to go to a different doctor.

“Of course I will. I would never let you down on that score. I’m here for you both on a professional level, but that is all.”

She silently exhaled in relief. At least she would still get to see Katherine in some capacity, though seeing her and not being with her was going to be hard.

“He has his medication review coming up.”

Katherine nodded. “I know you must hate me right now, but this doesn’t need to be awkward.”

“Will you continue to read to Dad?” She could feel hot tears forming in her eyes.

“I don’t think I should, no. I’m sorry.”

Anna nodded, tears now rolling from her eyes. “I should go.” She didn’t want Katherine to see her cry.

“I’m — ”

“Sorry. Yes, you said, but it doesn’t make it any easier.”

She couldn’t hold the tears back once she left the house. The potential life she’d dreamed of with Katherine was as firmly shut as the door behind her. During the short walk home, she could only feel numbness and disbelief. She was relieved when she finally put the key in the lock and could hide away on the other side of the door.

“You all right, Dad?”

“Yeah, I’m all right. You?”

“Not really, Dad. Katherine ended it. She said she’s not ready. A lot happen in her past, and I guess she needs more time to deal with it.”

“Oh, that’s a shame.” Harry frowned.

“You’re telling me.”

“There, there, I’m sure things will come right. Is she still going to be my doctor?”

“Yes, you have your medication review in a few days.”

“All right, love.”

“I’ll be upstairs if you need me.” Anna raced up the stairs, unable to hold in her disappointment any longer.
