I have nothing else to add here that will be appropriate, I’m drunk and horny.

Rebecca was one of a kind. Katherine had been out partying with her and then seen her prepare for court the next day, and she had trouble believing they were the same person. She took the term “work hard, play hard” to its fullest extent.

Anna emerged from the bathroom in a pair of Katherine’s joggers and a sweatshirt. Her hair was wrapped up in a towel on top of her head.

“Have you got a hairdryer I can borrow?”

“Yes, sit at my dressing table. I’ll dry it for you.”

Katherine removed the towel from Anna’s head and rubbed at her hair. She directed the hairdryer through her long hair, catching glimpses of Anna in the mirror, her forlorn expression unchanged each time. As she blew the last remnants of moisture from the ends of her hair, she thought she saw Anna’s lips move in the mirror and turned the hairdryer off.

“Did you say something?”

“No,” Anna replied softly.

“Well, all done.”

Anna pulled her hair around to her front and stroked it. “Thank you.”

“You take my bed. I put clean sheets on this morning.”

Anna climbed in. “Where are you going to sleep?”

“I’ll grab a blanket and take the sofa. None of the other beds are made up.”

“I’m not going to turf you out of your own bed and… I don’t want to be alone.”

Every part of Katherine wanted to jump into bed with Anna, but this wasn’t exactly what she had planned.

“Okay, but keep to your side. And no funny business.” Katherine raised her eyebrows at Anna, which finally got a smile out of her.

Katherine climbed in beside her and turned out the light. She was desperate to reach out to Anna, even if just to hold her. It wasn’t as if they were together anymore, but it didn’t feel appropriate even as just friends — if that was what they were now.

As she drifted off, she thought about what she would have to do the next day to bring Anna to the realisation that she would no longer be able to care for her father.
