Chapter 20

Anna wrenched her eyes open the next morning. She stretched herself out over the enormous bed, enjoying the softness of the sheets against her face. It was the most comfortable bed she’d ever slept in, and the sheets smelt of lavender washing powder.

It took a moment for her to work out where she was; everything felt different to normal. She sat bolt upright.Dad.She jumped out of bed, noticing the other side had been slept in. She desperately tried to recall the last twelve hours. Had she and Katherine? No.

Finding her clothes, she quickly dressed; there was so much to sort before she went back to the hospital. She’d need to book a taxi and call Carrie to say she wouldn’t be in today. A sniff of her jumper told her what she needed most was a change of clothes. No doubt Harry would want things taken into the hospital too.

A check of her phone told her it was past nine and Carrie would be wondering where she was. It also told her it was on four percent battery. Katherine really could have woken her.

Anna made her way downstairs to the kitchen where she guessed Katherine would be. She was right. Katherine was sat at the island working away on her laptop.

Anna stood in the doorway for a moment. She felt a little awkward being in Katherine’s space now after everything that had been exchanged between them.

Katherine noticed her and greeted her with a friendly smile which instantly put her at ease. “Morning.”

“Morning. Thanks for last night.”

“You’re very welcome.”

“We didn’t…” Anna trailed off, suddenly regretting asking.

“Really?” Katherine raised her eyebrows. “Do I look like I lure emotional women into my lair and then take advantage of them?”

Anna pulled in her bottom lip. “Possibly not.”

Katherine got up. “I would hope if we had, it wouldn’t be that unforgettable. Sit, I’ll make you some tea.”

“I can’t. I need to call Carrie, the hospital. I’ll need to sort a taxi back there and get some things together for Dad.”

“I’ve called Carrie; she said she doesn’t expect to see you for the rest of the week. I’ve rung the hospital; he’s fine. I’ve cleared my schedule, so I’ll be taking you to the hospital, but as for Harry’s bits, you’ll have to do that.”

Anna blinked and sat down at the island. “Thanks.”

Katherine eyeballed her cautiously. “Wait. No ‘You shouldn’t have done that,’ or ‘You’ve overstepped’?”

“No, just thanks,” Anna replied. She was grateful to have Katherine back by her side and helping; she’d missed it. They were a team, or at least they had been.

A text message popped up on Anna’s phone.

“Have you got a charger?”

“Yes, there’s one under the work surface.”

Anna looked down, surprised to see an electrical socket on the island.

She read the message as Katherine placed a mug in front of her. It was from Carrie.

Sorry to hear about your dad, we all hope he gets better soon. x

“So, what did the hospital say?” Anna wrapped her hands around the mug.

“He had a good night, and they will operate later today. They said you can see him this morning, although it’s not strictly visiting hours.”

“Are you sure you’re okay to take me?”

“Yes, I only had a meeting today, which has been rescheduled, and a bit of paperwork which I can do later.”

“You know what I mean.” Anna looked at her but was unable to hold eye contact.
