Lucy placed the remote in his hand and guided his thumb to the button on the side.

“Pick one.”

She pressed his thumb into it.

Harry scanned the screen. “The Great Escape.”

The Great Escapestarted playing.

“Will you look at that,” Harry said in amazement. “The wonders of modern technology.”

Lucy stood and joined Anna. “It’s much easier for our residents, especially those that struggle with motor functions. I’ll be back in a few minutes to take you to lunch, Harry.”

“I better go, Dad. I’ve got a taxi booked to take me home. Social services are due soon to check the house over. We’ll have you home as soon as we can, just need to get a few modifications done. I’m hoping we can get you a stair-lift fitted.”

“All right, love.”

“I’ll come back tomorrow and see how you’re settling in.” She kissed him on the head.

She hated leaving him there, all alone. What if he didn’t like the food or couldn’t get to the toilet in time? She hesitated as she left the room, making her way slowly to the door. Harry was too engrossed in the television to even notice she was leaving.

Lucy was just coming down the corridor.

“Lucy, what is for lunch?”

She thought for a moment. “It’s roast chicken or lasagne today. Does he like either?”

Anna took a deep breath. “His favourites.”

“Perfect.” Lucy placed a reassuring hand on Anna’s arm. “Don’t worry, we’ll look after him.”

Anna walked back to the reception area feeling surplus to requirements suddenly. She waited for the taxi outside, pleased to feel it had warmed up a bit. Her thoughts began to wander without a focus, so she withdrew her phone and wrote a list of jobs that still needed doing before the council visit.
