Anna felt sick with relief that he was well enough to go home. She just had to get through a long night before she could visit him. Hopefully she could take him some news to cheer him up — that was, if her courage didn’t completely abandon her before the fireworks went off.
Chapter 14
Katherine watched Anna as she pulled on her thermals.
Noticing, Anna posed suggestively.
She gave Anna a wink. “Hot! They would look better on the floor, though.”
Anna’s face creased and blushed. She picked up her trousers to whip her with but missed as Katherine leapt out of the way and disappeared into the dressing room.
By the time Katherine reappeared following two outfit changes, Anna was dressed and heading for the bedroom door.
Katherine’s phone vibrated on her bedside table.
“It’s Becks. I’ll catch up with you.”
Anna nodded and pecked her on the cheek. “Don’t forget to take some of the Abbey Barn leaflets from Carrie at the gate before you head up to the VIP tent. Sell, sell, sell.”
Katherine answered the phone whilst blowing a kiss at Anna as she left the bedroom. “Hey, Becks. How are you feeling?”
“Better thanks. I thought I’d ring and wish you both good luck for tonight.”
“Thanks, I’m sure we won’t need it; Anna seems to have it all in hand.”
“No doubt.” Rebecca chuckled. “How was Christmas? Sorry again to ditch you like that.”
“It was up and down. I let myself get wound up into a state when Anna was late getting back from the hospital. I thought it was happening all over again.”
“It’s okay to glitch occasionally, especially during stressful times.”
“Anna said I’d let everything overwhelm me,” Katherine replied, sitting on the bed.
“You were pretty excited about your Christmas plans and they kind of crashed around your ears. How do you feel now?”
“Better. Nervous about tonight.”
“I thought you said it was all under control.”
“The event is yes. Margaret on the other hand —.”
“Oh, do tell. Has she finally declared her undying love for you?”
Katherine could hear Rebecca stifle a giggle. “It’s not funny, Becks. It’s all rather awkward. She turned up on Christmas morning with a gift, an expensive gift at that. It all got a little weird and creepy.”
“Anna was right all along then?”
“It’s looking that way. I also believe she might have stolen an engagement ring I bought for Anna; it reappeared later, but still. I’m also thinking it might have been her that informed the GMC about us. I’m going to confront her about it tonight.”
“Wow, it’s all happening in Nunswick. You’ve told Anna all this I assume?”
“Yes, of course, apart from the engagement ring, it would have given the game away.”
“Be sure before you confront Margaret. You can’t come back from accusing someone of being a thief. Technically you can’t even accuse her of being a thief since it was returned, it’s called taking without owner consent. Record her on your phone if you’re looking to get evidence.”
“Good idea, I hadn’t thought of that. I better go. Anna will be waiting for me.”
“One thing before you go: any news on that proposal?”
