“Let’s never reach that stage,” Anna joked, placing a kiss on Katherine’s cheek. “Thank you, it’s lovely.”

“You’re welcome. Right, I’ll pour us some wine, there is some left over from the beef bourguignon that’s in the oven.”

“You really know how to turn a girl on. I’ll get changed and then show you those designs.”

Katherine wagged a finger at her. “No, you won’t, Miss Walker. No shop talk, please. You’ll have to see me in my office on Monday morning.” Katherine winked as she left the room.

That would have been quite the proposition if it wasn’t for the fact that Margaret would likely be there too.

Chapter 2

“Have you told her yet?” Harry asked, giving Katherine a cheeky grin.

Anna looked from Harry to Katherine. “Told me what? What are you two up to?”

Katherine hadn’t expected Harry to just come out with it, even though she often found older people quite blunt. She supposed it was a mixture of being a product of their time and having a lack of time left.

“I’ve been planning a birthday surprise for you.”

Anna narrowed her eyes at Katherine. “I hate surprises.”

“That’s because you’re a control freak. You need to work on that.”

Anna’s eyebrows shot up. “I’m the control freak?”

“Yes, I’m a perfectionist; they are two completely different traits,” Katherine replied, impressed by her own ability to keep a straight face.

Anna scrunched her face at Katherine. “So come on, what is it?”

“I’m taking you away to Bath for the weekend.” Katherine held her breath, unsure what response it would elicit from Anna. Harry had assured her that his daughter would be pleased.

Anna nodded.

Katherine found it difficult to read her. She was relieved to see her straight lips form into a smile.

“I can’t help but think someone had a hand in that decision, Dad.”

“Well, she asked, I just couldn’t remember if you ever went with that, oh, what’s her name.”

“Jessica, Dad,” Anna replied, rolling her eyes.

“Yeah, her.”

“No, I have never been to Bath. It will be my pleasure to join you on a weekend away. I thank you.”

Katherine grinned at her tone.

“See, told you, doc.”

“Dad, you can’t call her that. She’s not a doctor anymore.”

“Technically I’m still qualified,” Katherine quickly added under her breath.

Anna gave her a look that told her she wasn’t helping.

“She’ll always be the doc to me. You don’t mind do you, doc?”

Katherine leaned forward and tapped his hand lightly. “I’ve never minded, Harry.” She noticed how his speech had become more monotone since she’d first seen him as a patient. It had always been slow and soft, now he appeared to be losing vocal range. She made a mental note to check what vocal therapy he was receiving, if any.
