“How’s your dad getting on?”
“Good thanks. We’ve just been to see him.”
“Well, you give him my love when you see him next. Tell him I’ll pop in and see him sometime. I don’t forget who my friends are.”
Gloria wandered off to the bar and took a seat.
Anna sat back down to see Katherine sniggering behind her hand.
“Did you just receive a telling off from Gloria?”
The sides of Anna’s mouth curled down. “If I’m not mistaken, you received a compliment.”
Katherine beamed. “I rather think I did.”
Chapter 3
Anna had always loved the idea of having an office in the visitor centre. With its modern, sleek design moulded around part of the abbey’s structure, who wouldn’t? The sleek design followed through internally with stylish frosted glass-walled offices with a clear glass door. The only disadvantage it held for Anna was watching Margaret at that moment as she marched past with two coffees, one of which she knew was for Katherine.
“Everything okay?” Carrie asked, looking up from her Christmas themed desk. “I’m sure I just heard you hiss.”
“Did I?” She had certainly hissed in her head but hadn’t intended on vocalising it. “Carrie, how long have you known Margaret?”
Carrie chewed on the end of her pen. “About two years.”
“Is she a lesbian?”
Carrie choked on Anna’s question and removed the pen from her mouth. “I’m not sure. I’ve never known her to be with a man — or anyone at all, come to think of it. It’s not something we’ve discussed. She’s a very private person. Why?”
“I think she fancies Katherine.”
“What makes you think that?” Carrie replied, almost laughing.
Anna regaled Carrie with the tale of the flowers on the doorstep.
“Well, it could be completely innocent as she said. Or not.”
“Exactly,” Anna replied, only agreeing with the latter part of Carrie’s summation.
Carrie pulled her bottom lip up. “I suppose they are closer in age.”
Anna glared at her.
“Not that it means anything.”
Attempts to distract herself with work for the remainder of the morning fell flat. A welcome sight in the form of Katherine appeared in her doorway at midday.
“Margaret and I are just popping over to the pub for lunch. Shall we go through the branding when I get back? Margaret is heading home after.”
Anna’s brain took over and responded with a nod on her behalf. Internally her blood was boiling.
Margaret appeared beside Katherine and placed her hand on her shoulder. “Ready, Kat?” She tucked a loose strand of hair from her short grey bob behind her ear.
Katherine winked at Anna. “Won’t be long.”
Anna let out a loud breath as soon as they were out of sight. “Did you see that?”
“She winked at you! You two are so cute,” Carrie replied.
