The floor was hardwood under thick rug, and the walls were dark green and paneled between faux-pillars of wood that matched the floor. There was a sectional couch and two armchairs, a bookcase, shelves just above eye level with various small metal fidget games as well as delicate crystal statues, and art that looked real on the walls that weren’t otherwise occupied.

Tell had moved all of it, at least once, by now, but Tina didn’t know what he was expecting or hoping to find.

A secret message?

A weapon?

A way out?

She didn’t ask, because he still hadn’t spoken to her, other than his promise as the sun had been coming up, and she was increasingly taking this as a sign that he didn’t want them to give anything away to the listening devices in the room.

Listening devices.

That was what he was looking for.

Except that vampires didn’t need those.

Could she hear outside the room?

How thick were the walls?

“Are they listening?” Tina asked.

“Assume yes,” Tell answered.

Okay, then.

She wanted to ask if they were in danger, but anything he said to her after that would be suspect. She couldn’t believe him. Evennothere, he didn’t know all that much more than she did about what was going on.

Okay, he knew alotmore about what was going on, but it wasn’t going to make that much difference to what he could predict.

Probably.

She lay back down on the bed again.

She wanted to whine.

It would have made her feel better.

To demand to know whether they were just going to hold them here until they died of boredom.

Maybe she should have been searching the room, too.

She and Tell often complimented each other, when it came to what they found and understood.

But just going andlookingat everything… she wouldn’t have the first clue what might actually be useful.

So she watched the ceiling.

The sun was down.

She wasn’t physically uncomfortable.

But this really wasn’t all that much better, really.

She sat up again.

She thought that Tell had started his third loop of the room.
