I held him just as tight and listened to his pounding heartbeat against my ear. He really had been scared.

“I’m sorry. My phone wasn’t dead at first. I called Reagan because I was scared to tell y’all I broke another car. But then it really did die and I ate all my donuts and I was starting to worry. You’re sure you’re not mad?”

He leaned back and stared down at me. The way he searched my face was intense, like he was really looking for something.

“Are you really okay? You seem scattered.”

I frowned.

“Scattered?”

He shook his head and cleared his throat.

“Nothing. It’s nothing. I’m just glad you’re okay.”

“How’d you find me?”

“The car. It didn’t seem normal that it was parked on the road for so long.” He grunted. “Oh, yeah, the cars can all be tracked if needed.”

I studied his face and tried to see what wasn’t there. He was worried but in a way I’d never seen him worry. Not that I’d known them for long but I knew them all well enough to know that he wasn’t saying something.

“What’s going on? You seem off.”

He forced a laugh and shook his head.

“I’m good. Everything’s good. It was just a long day. And to answer your previous question, no matter how many cars you wreck it won’t change the way we love you.”

I froze.

“What’d you just say?”

His cheeks turned red and he stammered but no real words came out. I finally decided to cut him some slack and leaned up on my toes to whisper in his ear. His hands gripped my hips tight as I did.

“Even if you didn’t mean to say that and I’m taking it the wrong way, I’m not sorry you said it. I feel that way. It feels insane to feel this so fast but it is what it is.” I kissed his throat and smiled. “But I’m still not going to say it yet. Not until I know you meant to say it. Okay?”

“You’re still getting a driver. Even if you feel that way and I feel that way, too. That won’t persuade me.”

I waited until we were both in his truck and someone had been called to get the car to slide closer to him and reached for his belt.

“Maybe I can persuade you in a different way.”

CHAPTER 45

Harley

I was driving myself. Even better, I was driving Belinda. She’d been fixed up beautifully and she didn’t shut off when I hit the panic button anymore. Which was kind of lame if I thought about it too much. I didn’t want to change who she really was. I could admit she drove so much smoother, though. She sounded like a girl in her teens instead of an eighty-year-old smoker.

I loved having Belinda back because that also meant I felt comfortable enough to run an errand on my lunchbreak. All my men were busy in meetings that day so I was free to head back to my old apartment to pick up a few things and look for the check. If Susie ever gave me an answer and it was yes, I wanted to be ready.

It was strange seeing my building after living at the ranch. For the first time in months, I actually cringed when I passed a rat going down the stairs. Some things still felt the same, though. As soon as I stepped into my apartment and shut the door Aaron was right there on the other side of the wall, ready to fight with me.

“You’re back two seconds and you’re already being loud as hell!”

I smiled and rolled my eyes at him.

“You’ve been sitting by the wall waiting for me to come home, haven’t you? Just admit you miss me and are bored without me.”

“No, I’ve been too busy shouting at the new neighbor on the other side. I swear to god, this lady’s cat just screams all day and night. It never ends! I’m starting to dream about cats and let me tell you, some of them are nightmares and I think I could sue that bitch.”
