Time to rise.

Time to explore my powers.

Diving into the depths of me, I let the wolf handle more and more. The control is hers, ours. Is there even a difference between us? The disgusting drip and stench of the sewers melts away and I blink, my form blending with the light, using the angles and the fractures from the grate somewhere above us to move.

The light bends around me and although it feels like time moves with its normal speed, I’m across the space. There, gone.

The speed draws a laugh out of me and when I thrust my arm against the watery streams of light, it seems to disappear.

Oh, this is good. This is so much better than I thought.

With power racing through my veins, I sprint around the room and knock down Andras’s men like dominoes. One after the other, the first three fall. Boom, boom, boom.

I spare a glance over my shoulder to see Torin and Mathis staring at me.

Whoever we come up against, it won’t matter, because I’ll take them down. The scents of the omegas swirl from the tunnel to the left. Just as I clear the last of the wolves away, a fresh set of soldiers march out from the tunnel to block our exit.

They take one look at their fallen friends and rush toward me.

My fangs lengthen. “Big mistake.”

And like a tornado, the rest of my men move into action with me, causing as much destruction as possible with every breath.

Chapter 19

Dax

Ah.

There’s nothing better than this.

Blood pours past my canines and trickles down my throat like the sweetest fucking booze in the world. Even better than booze, because this is hot and fresh even if it’s tainted with the slight undertone of literal shit.

It doesn’t matter.

My enemies fall. Another twist and the man’s neck cracks. He slumps down like a bag of bones trapped in a meat suit and I move to the next. Swipe, claw, entrails on the floor. Onto the next. And the next.

If Andras keeps sending them, I’ll keep killing them.

When the moon rises, when the wind grows cold—

The hummed lullaby has transformed into words, and the fucking song twist in my head again. I shake to dislodge them. Like ticks, but worse, because at least ticks serve a purpose. They’ve gotta eat like the rest of us.

This song, the one I can’t place, plays on a loop at the worst possible moments.

I growl and grab the nearest man by the face, squeezing until his cheeks go red and his eyes bulge from their sockets.

“Over here!”

Red’s voice shatters the roar of the melody in my head and I blink, still squeezing. Bone cracks and this man goes down, too.

She windmills her arms and dips down one of the tunnels, moving faster than the rest of us.

For a half a second earlier, I swore I saw her disappear. Literally disappear and show up on the other side of the room. It’s insane. Right? People don’t just disappear.

We’re not superheroes.

I take off after her with Mathis right behind me. Whether the other fuckwits are with us…doesn’t really matter. Does it? My girl is strong enough to butcher her way through whatever comes.
