It’s been really fun this week. Jason likes to move people around, so we don’t get bored in our jobs, so I’ve been working down on the beach for a few days. And we had some really fun clients come out too. It was this big group of teenagers, who all know each other from back home. And we had a great time teaching them wakeboarding, and we did this beach-Olympics thing. And then afterwards we saw them in town, and they were all super drunk, even though most of them are only fifteen or something.

Today we all sailed up to town, in like this flotilla of different boats. We moored up in the harbour, and we all had pizza for lunch, and then ice creams. Then we all sailed back again. I think they really liked it. I think they appreciated the sense of independence it gave them. And maybe because we let them drink alcohol too, even though we weren’t supposed to.

OH MY GOD!!! You’re never going to believe what happened! Sally Nanny got sent home! She was such a slut, she had it coming, but it’s still way shocking. Those teenagers I was talking about, well one of them was pretty fit, but he was super young. But Sally Nanny being Sally Nanny was all over him on client night, when we have to mingle with the guests over dinner, and I heard she got off with him afterwards down on the beach.

And then last night, we all went out to Skalio, and I wasn’t drinking much cos I was tired, but Sally was, and her and this kid were at it again on the walk back, they kept stopping to have a snog, and he had his hands permanently in her top. And when we got back to the hotel, she said she was gonna go for a swim in the pool, which is a really bad idea. It’s one of the things Jason said we really weren’t allowed to do, because loads of the rooms overlook the pool, and the guests don’t want to see us all drunk. Anyway, Helen went in, just in her knickers, but Sally Nanny stripped off totally naked – big floppy tits and her fanny out – and she wasn’t even quiet about it. Then Helen came back to the staff house to dry off, but Sally stayed with the kid, and apparently he started taking her from behind, on one of the sun loungers! And then these clients, out for a nice midnight stroll, they came walking up the path by the pool, and they got to see everything – Sally Nanny at it with this fifteen-year-old kid.

Anyway, the next day, the clients came in to see Jason. Imogen was there, and she overheard everything. Apparently they were really upset, they said they hadn’t come on holiday to Ancient Greece!

When they’d gone, Jason called Imogen in and got her to book the first flight home for Sally Nanny (notice how he doesn’t trust Mandy to do it!) – and then he called Sally up from the crèche andtold her she was fired, and that she better stay out of sight until she leaves, or she might get thrown in prison for actual rape.

So we’re down one nanny! Can’t say I’m sorry though.

July 22nd

Bit of a weird day today. Because the crèche is still short staffed, Jason told me I had to help out, so I spent the whole morning in this room full of babies. I thought I was going to hate it, because I’ve never really wanted kids, but actually it was weirdly alright. I wasn’t going to do any nappy changes, because it’s not my job, but it was sort of fun playing with them. We took them for a walk around the gardens just before lunch and then down to the beach in the afternoon, and they followed us around like little ducklings. They’re actually quite sweet.

Last day in the crèche, we’ve got a new nanny coming out, thank God. It’s not that I mind the crèche, but it does have this smell, like poo and detergent, and it gets all over your clothes. The new nanny is called Suzanne. I haven’t met her yet but according to Imogen she’s got really bad acne.

Aiden wants to cool it, which is fine by me. He’s this guy I’ve been seeing, but he’s pretty boring actually. All he talks about is sailing.

Everyone’s going out tonight. I’m writing this at the staff house, and me and Imogen are already halfway through a bottle of Metaxa. It feels like I haven’t had a good night out in ages. I feel like I need to let off some steam.

THIRTY-FOUR

As Mum gets closer to the month of August, I’m getting this sense of – I don’t know – dread? Like, is thisreallyhow I want to find out the name of my father? How am I gonna feel if he’s just some kid, like a drunken one-night stand? And what if he’sliterallya teenage tourist? Plus, it’s actually quite hard to keep up, there’s so many, and sometimes the first I hear about them is when she breaks up.

I don’t know, for some reason, even though Mum wouldn’t ever say anything about who my dad is, I still imagined him as a proper grown up – like someone I could maybe meet one day. And like – there’d be meaning behind me. A moment of something that meant something to her. But from her diary, it’s obvious how immature she was, just partying around. I mean, I guess it’s fine – I’m not judging her. Not too much. Like, she’s lived the life she’s lived and that’s fine by me, but I just want to find out where I fit into it. Is that too much to ask?

But I keep reading, and then there’s a problem.

THIRTY-FIVE

August 9th, 2000

So I haven’t written for a while, but that’s because

THIRTY-SIX

That’s it. That’s all she’s written. For the entire month of August. And the next entry is September 15. What doesthatmean? Why hasn’t she written anything? I page backwards and forwards several times, as if that’s going to somehow make more text appear. But obviously it doesn’t. So – feeling…I don’t know, cheated? Relieved? I’m not even sure – I keep going, but I feel pretty sick by this point.

September 15th

My bad for not writing in ages. I must get better, but it’s been sooooo crazy busy what with the school holidays and all the kids we’ve had running around, like little vermin. It’s been way fun though, all the same. I’ve like, had four guys on the go, too, for most of the summer, but it’s all been fun, nothing serious.

There’s only a few weeks left of the season, and Jason says we have to start packing things away for the winter. But he also started talking about jobs for next year. He left this sheet with Imogen, where we could all put our names down, and she made sure that hers and my name were on the top of the list. And then she sneaked into Mandy’s office where they’d been discussing who theywanted to come back, and who they didn’t, and they’d put a tick by both of our names. I mean I’m not surprised, because we’ve both been super reliable and stuff, but it’s still cool to know for sure.

October 2nd

It’s really different, this time of year. It actually rained today. I don’t think I’ve really seen rain in months, but the sky was grey and full of dark clouds, and then it just started raining, and just didn’t stop. I didn’t have a single customer at the bar all afternoon. I just sat there staring at the raindrops splashing onto the surface of the water. It was pretty.

Then afterwards, when the rain stopped, all the staff went out into town and we had a meal in the restaurant by the harbour. It was all paid for by Jason. He gave a little speech thanking us for all our hard work, and saying how he was looking forward to seeing us come back next year too. Then he looked at me and made a joke about the bars needing the winter to restock all the booze. It was sweet though.
