“What are you doing with Joe Sutton’s daughter?”

“She’s my girlfriend. I was just taking her home.”

He laughed loudly. “Did you say girlfriend?”

“I did. Loud and clear.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

I shrugged at him. “I’m not lying.”

“That’s a mighty big bruise she’s got there. You said she’s your girl…”

“She is.”

“She looks drunk.”

“She’s just had a long day.”

“I know her daddy. Good family. Good girls like that don’t normally drink. They normally don’t hang out with the likes of you, either.”

Steeling myself, I nodded. “I’m aware.”

“Why don’t you step out of the vehicle?”

“Look, it’s Christmas Eve and I’m just tryna take Holly home. Can I do that?”

“I need you to step out of the car so I can check on her. She still hasn’t woken up yet, and I’m starting to think you were lying to me.”

I needed to keep a handle on my frustration. All I wanted to do was getHolly home so she could get some rest, and that meant doing something I wasn’t really good at: following the rules. I got out of the truck and shut the door behind me, but the second I did that, I was being spun around, the door of the truck up against my chest. “Are you fucking serious?” I snapped, trying to look over my shoulder at him. The familiar feeling of metal met my wrists, and then I heard the clanking of the cuffs being secured. “What the fuck are you doing?”

“Don’t even think about moving,” Fowler said.

“How the fuck am I supposed to move exactly?” I turned my head to see the cop checking on Holly. His fingers were on her neck, a breathalyzer in his other hand. “Am I free to go or what?” I asked loudly.

“You stay put,” Fowler said. “Miss Sutton’s got a BAC of zero point thirteen.”

I stilled. That was a lot for a girl who had never touched alcohol before. “Well, if you let me go, I can make sure she gets home safe.”

“I don’t really trust you to do that,” he said, turning me around so that my back was to the truck door.

“How long you gonna keep me here?”

“Just a few more minutes, son.”

“And then what?”

“You’ll see.”

He was on his phone, voice low so that I couldn’t make out a single word. A good ten minutes passed by until I heard the sound of another car approaching. I thought they were just gonna drive on by with a show for them to watch, but the car stopped, and then there were footsteps, loud and heavy and fast.

Then I heard a voice I really didn’t need to hear.

“What the hell did you do to my daughter?”
