Daddy erupted, his hot seed triggering another series of small, trembling climaxes that left her panting.

He’d completely filled her, claiming her as his own.

And when he shifted on the bed and took her into his arms, a sense of peace and calm washed over her. Iris had never felt so safe, so cared for, and so loved as she did in that moment.

This is what it’s like, she told herself. This is what love is.

It had been so long.

Twenty minutes later, when they’d both come down from their experiences, Iris found the intimacy hadn’t faded one bit.

Jack kissed the top of her head. “What are you thinking about, babygirl?”

She rested her chin on his chest and looked up at him. “Being loved feels… wonderful.” After a second, she added, “That probably sounds pathetic, huh?”

“Not at all. Do you want to talk about it?”

She rested her cheek on him and then brought a finger up, tracing his chest as she spoke. “I remember my grandma. She raised me until I was six. A wonderful woman. I knew love then. She was my world. But she died. I just sort of got bounced around between family members after that, until I was eighteen. No one actually wanted me.” She sighed. “I suppose I should be thankful. They at least gave me a roof over my head and food until I was an adult. But no one wanted me. I was an obligation.”

She looked up to see Jack nod.

“Your parents?”

“Never knew who my dad was. My mom had some substance-abuse issues and spent most of my life unaccounted for. Or in rehab. Once in jail. She died a few years back.”

“I’m sorry.”

She shrugged. “Thanks. I didn’t really know her.”

He kissed her head again. “You deserved better. So did she.”

Iris sat up. Propping herself up on her elbows, she said, “I pray she’s at peace.” She grinned. “But I do have better now. I have you.”

Jack held her close. “And you always will. I love you.”

Iris giggled and nestled close to him.

“And I love you, too.” She sighed wistfully before adding one more word.

“Daddy.”

Chapter Twenty-Five

“I kept you up too late,” Jack said with a grin.

It was the following morning and Iris had just yawned as she sat across from Daddy at a table in a diner that rested halfway between his place and Athena’s.

The restaurant was old fashioned with a counter and stools, a juke box, and booths in the front along the windows.

She was working on a stack of pancakes along with milk and orange juice, while Jack was having an omelette, hash browns, and coffee.

“I’ll be fine,” she said with a smirk. “It’s not like I really have anything to do today. No work and—” Her eyes went wide. “Oh, crap!”

“What’s wrong?”

“I forgot about my shift at the laundromat yesterday! I was supposed to work last night!”

Guilt was tearing her apart now. It must have been etched all over her face, because Jack said, “Honey, it’s okay. Mistakes happen.”
