I attached the boutonniere to my flannel shirt and said, “You sure you want to pass on those boots? I’d hate to see you twist an ankle out here.”

She was staring at me with a mix of horror and approval. I’d managed to get something by her, the big-city lawyer. I could tell she hated that it impressed her.

Elizabeth pursed her lips and shook her head. “No boots.”

“Okay. If you change your mind, let me know.”

Then I got out of the truck and let Frankie loose. He hopped right out of the truck, tail zooming back and forth, then ran for the crowd I saw in the distance.

After I helped Elizabeth out of the truck, she took three tottering steps in her heels and turned back to look at me with a disconsolate look on her face.

“Why wouldn’t she have told me she was getting married in acowfield?”

I reached out and steadied her before she could topple. “The invitationdidsay to dress casual and wear peach. I think I fit the bill. You, on the other hand look like you’re trying out for the Miss America pageant. You might have misunderstood the vibe.”

She swallowed hard. “Ican’twear hiking boots to a wedding. What will people think of me?”

I glanced down at the fancy peach gown she was wearing. “They’ll think you’rehalfsensible.”

It only took her making a few more attempts at walking in those sexy heels, before she gave in and accepted my generous offer.

I picked her up and carried her back to my truck, then plopped her down in the passenger seat.

Then I held the kitten while Elizabeth slipped into the boots.

Boots with a fancy ball gown.

She was starting to look more Ozarkian by the minute.

As we made our way to the guest area she muttered, “Who the fuck gets married in a field? I guess that’s what happens when you marry a trash truck driver.”

Wooo-eee, my prissy princess was in for ahellof a surprise.

“Someone’s got to take out the trash,” I rumbled back, enjoying every moment.

I couldn’t help but grin as I lifted her back down and steadied her sweet ass. Even in hiking boots, she could hardly walk straight. It was like she’d never been on grass before.

Chapter 7

Elizabeth

Everything had gone sideways.

First the plane.

Then the rental car.

And now this.

How had I met a man that I was actually interested in for the first time in years who hit exactlyzeroof the must-have criteria I’d laid out for myself?

And what were the chances that the same man just happened to be going to the same wedding as me?

His strong arms reached out and stabilized me one more time as I almost took a faceplant right onto a cow patty.

Hudson was intoxicating to be around.

You put a hot man and a cute kitten together and the combination was irresistible. Leona seemed perfectly content to hitch a ride on his shoulder.
