“Okay, so I know your favorite dessert. What’s your favorite meal?” I asked.
He thought about it, then he said, “Pork chops, smothered in gravy on a pile of homemade mashed potatoes.”
I nodded, “That sounds good.”
He winked, “Yours?”
I shook my head, “It’s so silly.”
He shook his head, “It’s not. What?”
I sighed, “Okay, well, my mother couldn’t cook. Like at all. My dad did all the cooking. Anyway, my mother found this recipe for Shepherd’s Pie.” I told him.
He nodded as he took a swig of tea.
“And she made it. But... well... she got it confused with something else... and I loved it.”
He chuckled, “What did it end up being?”
“We called it Hamburger Surprise. I actually asked for it on every birthday. My dad tried to make it, but it wasn’t as good. So, it’s a layer of hamburger meat with seasonings and a can of tomato soup. Then it’s a layer of green beans, then a layer of instant mashed potatoes.”
His nose scrunched up, “Really?”
“See! I said it was silly, but I loved it. I still do. I make it on occasion.”
He nodded, then he sighed, “I’ll have to try it. Shouldn’t judge it.”
I winked.
Then our food was placed down.
He looked at it, then at me, then at the server, and nodded his thanks.
We both started eating, asking questions as we did so.
The food was really good.
So good in fact that I even went for another bite and realized it was empty.
The server walked by then and chuckled, “Happens all the time.”
Then she placed down two smaller bowls that contained a brownie with what looked to be vanilla ice cream drizzled with caramel on top.
I lifted a brow, and Xander sighed. Then he pointed to a group of tables that had been pushed together.
I looked over and felt my mouth drop open.
“No way,” I said.
Then I looked back at Xander.
He nodded, then sighed, “They wanted to make sure I didn’t fuck this up.”
And that... well... that was when I felt my temper start to rise.
I narrowed my eyes at him, then said, “I’ll be right back.”
I stood up and stomped over to where they were sitting.
