I take the card carefully.
“Don’t lose it. It’s risky for me to even give it to you. Send me whatyou need. Be specific.”
He starts to walk away, then glances back.
“I like your fire, Isa. Good luck.”
He disappears into the darkness, and I lean against the hedge, branches pressing into my back, but I hardly notice them.
He said yes.
Chapter Twelve
Luca
Seven weeks later (Mid-November)
The alert pings across my screen, tagged Sicily. My eyes skim the data, scanning line after line, parsing it in seconds.
Then I stop cold. Fingers still on the keys, lungs stalled, like my system just crashed.
Every detail pulls into focus with brutal clarity. And all I can think of is Isa, how this will affect her… affect all of them.
This changeseverything.
I shove back from the desk and start pacing, energy burning hot under my skin.
Farfalla. This is big.
I run a hand through my hair, wishing I could be there with her, to hold her if she needs it. Though I doubt she’ll shed many tears.
But it will shift her world.
Fuck me!
For years, I’ve been forced to keep to the agreement, watching Isa from the shadows. But the barrier is gone now.
I could go tonight, tear her out of that house and lock the world out for good.
But the Brazil job looms. Dammit.
I can’t take her there. It’s not safe. And I’ll never abandon her again.
Fuck! As much as I want to be with her right now, I won’t risk her life.
My jaw locks, fists tight at my sides.
As soon as that job is finished, I’m going for her.
It’s only a few more weeks. I can do that… especially knowing what… who waits for me at the end.
I promised Isa I’d always come back. And now I finally will.
Hang in there, farfalla. Not long now.
