It’sthe next day while I’m sitting in an office at the Gold’s practice facility, wrapping up some administrative work with Jean-Michel beside me doing the same when I bring up the whole Jason thing.
“We need to talk about?—”
“Nope,” he mutters.
Right.Well.
That may be his answer, but it’s not the one that will satisfy me.“Weneedto talk about it.”
He shrugs.“There’s nothing to talk about.”
I lean in and drop my voice, thinking about the quiet man who’d told Jean-Michel he’dhandle it.“Is he… Did Pascal…”
Jean-Michel’s head of security is seriously scary and while I’m pissed at what Jason did and how he won’t go away, I don’t exactly want him to…disappear permanently.
Disappear from my life?Yes.
Be fitted with concrete shoes and dropped in the Bay?Not so much.
Jean-Michel just stares at me as I trail off.
“He’s not dead,” he says and let it be noted that he waited a while to put me at ease on that front.
I exhale.
“Jason is, however”—he leans back in his chair, steepling his hands in front of his chest—“very motivated to move back to Baltimore.”
My eyes go wide.
“And to not come back.”Jean-Michel’s tone is deadly when he adds, “Ever.”
“Oh,” I whisper.“You, uh, you know you didn’t have to do that.”
“Iknowthat I won’t have someone who’s under my protection dealing with an asshole ex-fiancé?—”
“But—”
“Same as I know,” he goes on, talking over me, “that I don’t want my head coach having to deal with the same problem.”
I sigh and sit back, something unpleasant churning in my stomach.“I bet you didn’t have to deal with this with Auclair.”
“You’re right,” he says.“I didn’t.”
Ouch.
But I don’t get the chance to sit in that bit of hurt.
Because he’s still talking.
“But with Auclair, I didn’t have someone who cared about our players like you do.I didn’t have someone build a system around our talent instead of forcing square pegs into round holes.I didn’t have someone who works her ass off to get the best out of the team.”
