He nods, mouth twitching.“French toast, sausage, and eggs.”
My stomach rumbles again.
“Get dressed,” he says, wrapping his fingers around my wrist and tugging me out of bed, nudging me toward the closet.
“Bossy,” I mutter.
“Gotta compete with my stubborn badass girlfriend,” he says, swatting me lightly on the ass.
“Rude.”I mock scowl.
“DeeDee baby?”
“Mmm?”I ask as I reach into a drawer and pull out a pair of sweats.
“Ernest is eating with us.”
I still, heart squeezing.“He is?”
Suddenly, Huddy is there, body close, hands cupping my cheeks.“He loaned us the eggs.”His mouth hitches up.“Couldn’t leave him to his own devices.Plus”—he settles his forehead against mine—“he’s using his cane today, so I figure he can use a good meal and a couple of underlings to boss around.”
There my heart goes again.“Honey,” I whisper, covering his hands with my own.
“If you want to stay up here while I pull weeds or wax his car or whatever he orders me to do, you can.”He brushes his lips over my forehead.“I’ll bring you up a plate and you can?—”
“I love you!”I blurt.
He rocks back on his heels and my heart convulses again—this time painfully.
Shit.
I can’t believe I said that out loud.It’s too much.Too soon.Just toomuch.
“Forget I said anything,” I whisper.“I, uh.I’m just hungry and really love French toast.Clearly, that’s gone to my head.”
“Baby,” he says, his voice so damned soft it almost hurts.“Look at me.”
“Go on downstairs,” I order.“I’ll be right behind you.”
“Dee.”His fingers come to my jaw.“Please look at me, sweetheart.”
My throat is tight, my pulse hammering through my veins, but I manage to bring my gaze back to his.
And God, but his eyes are beautiful.
Like a thunderstorm is just beginning to clear on a warm summer day.
He takes my hand, presses it to his chest.“Feel that?”
“Feel what?”I ask.
“My heart,” he murmurs.
I nod.
“Baby, it beats for you.”
I suck in a breath, my knees going weak as relief surges through me.But he’s got me—of course he does. His arms band around my waist and he draws me close, and then…he’s kissing me.
