“Two too many. You bled so much you soaked through your sweats.”

A shrug.“I’ve bled more.”

Doc snorts again as he bandages Hudson’s leg.

“You’ve bledmore?”I ask archly.

“You’re the one who’s memorized my injury list.”A beat.“What do you think?”

I resist the urge to throttle him.Just barely.“I think that you’ve likely delayed yourself from playing for at least a few more days—” Now I slant an archlookat Doc.

Who wisely agrees.

“Coach is right,” Doc says, peeling off his gloves.“The injury isn’t serious, but it needs time to heal.So listen to reason, keep your ass on the couch for the next ten days?—”

“Ten!”Hudson exclaims.

“Ten,” Doc repeats.“Lucky it’s early in the season and you won’t miss too much, but you will if you push it again and I have to pull rank.”

Hudson glares at Doc.

Then at me.

Then he closes his eyes.

Which, I have to admit, is an effective way to end a conversation.

Though, he doesn’t let go of my hand and when I try to slide mine free, his hold tightens.

I sigh.Men.

Then I tug again, adding, “I’m going to walk Doc out.”

His lids peel back and his gray eyes are full of emotions I can’t read.

But he loosens his grip, allowing me to pull my fingers from his.Instantly, I miss the warmth, the strength, the…connection.

Shaking myself, I step back from the couch and follow Doc into the hallway.

His eyes are dancing and he opens his mouth.

“Don’t start?—”

He bumps my shoulder with his.“FYI, I know I’m biased because I work with the team, but I like Hudson a lot better than Jason.”

“You only met Jason once.”

“That was enough,” he says dryly.

And I suppose it was.

“We broke up.”

“I noticed.”I frown and he flicks his gaze down at my naked ring finger.“I’m observant, Dee.”Then his face gentles.“Are you okay?”

I shrug.“Turns out Jason is a cheating jerk.”

“Asshole.”Said with such intensity that I smile.
