It’s a small studio apartment with a small couch in front of a TV, the tiniest kitchen known to man, and a single bed in the corner.

What a sad excuse for a house.

“Um, yeah,” Jack says.

I glare at him and shake my head.

“Where can I put this?” I look around me for a hanger, but everything looks worn down. Not dirty necessarily, just…cheap. “Never mind.”

I wrap the coat back around me and sit on the edge of the couch, ensuring minimal contact between the furniture and myclothes. This simply won’t do, but I manage to get adequately comfortable.

And then I realize everyone’s staring at me.

“What?”

Annie pats the space next to her, and I refuse as politely as I can muster.

“What are we watching?” I glance at the TV that looks like it’s been pulled straight out of the nineties, all boxy, spacious, and curvy, and turn to Jack again.

“Did you rob a thrift store?”

Robin chuckles. Annie purses her lips. Brandon starts crying again, and Zeke puts his hands on his hips.

“More like Denise robbed him blind,” Zeke says.

“Who is Denise?”

“You haven’t told him about Denise?”

Jack hides behind his beaver, and I bite the inside of my cheek.

“We’ve been too busy getting to know each other to talk about our exes,” I offer before Zeke punches me or Jack into a wall.

“Denise is…” Jack starts as he sets the beaver down in its cage and approaches the rest of us.

“A bitch,” Robin says.

“A lost soul,” Annie offers.

“A poor cow,” Brandon says.

“A fucking monster,” Zeke says.

“My ex.”

“Ex doesn’t even cut it,” Robin scoffs.

“That’s right. She’s the dickhead who took everything and left you with nothing. She’s more than just an ex.” Zeke raises his voice. “She’s a horrible human being.”

“The worst,” Brandon agrees.

Jack shrugs and licks his lips.

“Come on, guys. She wasn’t that bad.”

“He had to buy stuff from Craigslist because she ran with his money and all their stuff.” Annie grabs my hand and squeezes it.

“She does sound terrible,” I tell Jack.
