It sounds almost like a warning. Maybe I should heed it. But how can I when I’m so close?

“Does April have an office?”

“Seojun, no. April is… She’s scary. You don’t want to mess with her.”

“Did you mean it?”

“Mean what?”

“Back at the party.” I take his hand and squeeze it. “When you told me you’ll see this to the end. Did you mean it?”

“Of course.”

I lean my forehead against his and stare into his eyes, hoping they won’t hate me by sunrise.

“Then we have to do this.”

CHAPTER 18

JACK

Ishouldn’t be condoning this. I’m an agent of SPAM. I’m a CREEP. I’m a man of the law.

I know it’s wrong.

But…

How could I have refused Seojun when he looked at me with those big puppy-dog eyes and a quiver in his lip as if he was terrified of being turned down?

I’m seeing a whole new side of him tonight, one I thought I’d seen but was wrong. I thought I’d seen him be vulnerable after dark in his bedroom, but now…he’s different. He must have had some confidence in himself while I was still under his charm, while I was stuck with him, and that confidence went AWOL the minute he realized I was free.

So, of course, I can’t refuse him. I also want to help him. I want to help him find his family, get them back, or, at the very least, get some closure. I can’t imagine what it must be like wonderingwhat happened to them all the time, the kind of places his mind would go to, the scenarios.

It’s funny because less than a week ago, I looked forward to being free and handing Seojun and all his associates over to the appropriate authorities, but now…that’s the last thing I want to do. Does that make me a bad person?

“Seriously?” Seojun grimaces beside me when I stop in front of Betsy’s Pizza Place on the Upper East Side.

“What?” I smile and turn to look at him. How did I know this would be his reaction?

“This is April’s office? For real?”

I shrug. “This was her office last time I talked to her.”

He furrows his brows and sticks his tongue out.

“Have you people ever heard of office units? Ever heard of Hell’s Kitchen? SoHo? The Financial District? This island is littered with clean and purpose-built buildings. Why do you insist on setting up base in the weirdest places?”

I cross my arms and lean into his face.

“Are you saying there’s something wrong with pizza? Because I was actually craving one.”

Seojun purses his lips from side to side a few times before he rubs his belly.

“Yeah, I wouldn’t oppose a slice. Those blinis were great but didn’t fill me up at all.”

I slap my face and turn away.

“What?”
