"Just making sure..." I groaned and brought the blade down on Horus's chest, "he's dead for good." A zing of magic burned through me but I ignored it and pulled the axe out to strike him again. And again. Every time the blade came into contact with skin, I felt the singe of energy and it gave me confidence in what I was doing. When there was barely any body left, I dropped the axe and turned to Yaya. "You killed his human body.” I panted. “I killed his spirit. Can you say dream team?" I offered her my fist.
"Can I say what now?" she asked, ignoring my fist.
I chuckled. Of course she didn't know what a fist pump was. But I loved her anyway. She had saved me. Saved all of us.
"Nothing," I said and turned to help Sett up. "We should get out of here."
I glanced up to the ceiling that was several miles away and hoped the house had a way of letting us out without needing to fall or climb. A door appeared in the middle of a small sand dune barely a second later.
"Good house," I mumbled.
I put Sett's arm around my shoulders and supported him by the waist. His chest inflated and when he breathed out he stood a little taller.
"That…was easier than I thought it'd be," he said.
I grimaced and made my way to the door. With each step Sett seemed more and more able to stand until he was walking all by himself.
"Yeah, sure it was. We just had to die a couple hundred times."
"For you, I'd die a thousand more," he said.
I rolled my eyes and laughed. "All right, Christina Perri," I snorted but despite the joke, his words crept all the way into my heart and made a home there.
Maybe…maybe we'd be okay, after all.
Drew
The door led through to the kitchen and as soon as we entered, Gene jumped at me with both arms and knocked the wind out of me.
"Ohmygod Drew! You're okay," he mumbled in my neck.
I hugged him tighter. "I should be asking you that question."
It felt like forever ago since Horus had taken him. It felt as if I'd lost him for so much longer and I'd missed his presence, his voice, his smile.
"Did he hurt you?" I pushed back and checked his body as if it could give me any clue to the damage that monster could inflict.
"He didn't." Gene shook his head. "I swear he didn't."
"Are you sure? He's very persuasive," I said.
Although was knowing worse than knowing? If he had hurt him and made him forget would that be so terrible? Either way there was no way to be sure. The only thing I could do was be there for my brother and never, ever again, let him get in danger's way.
"He didn't touch him. I promise," Anubis said and he took a step forward to put his arm on my brother's shoulder as if they were old pals.
"How do you know? Do you remember?" Sett asked him.
Anubis nodded. "Things are getting clearer by the second. The haze of his control is almost off me and I can remember all the time we spent in that basement. He didn't do anything to us. He didn't want us. He just needed us to get to you."
I wasn't so convinced. Maybe Horus didn't want them in that way, but he'd said it himself. He abused to assume power. I found it hard to believe he wouldn't want to exert his power over them both.
Anubis turned to me. "I promise. I'll even ask my dad to clear my head if you want to be sure."
I looked from my brother to him and took a deep breath. "I…I believe you," I said. It wasn't entirely true, but even if he was lying it wasn't out of his own volition. Hopefully, Sett could clear his head and we'd know, although at this point I was ready to treat both men as if they'd been harmed by Horus anyway.
"I don't believe we've officially met." He extended his hand and I stared at it for a moment or two before I shook it. "I'm Anubis, but you can call me Ani."
"Drew," I mumbled.
