“That teddy bear please,” Holly said, pointing towards that purple bear. “I guess it’s not so rigged after all, hm?”
“I don’t know,” I muttered. Picking up one of the darts, I pressed what was supposed to be the sharpened end to the pad of my finger, but all I felt was the dullest of stings. “Hey, this dart is blunt as fuck. Thing’s not even—”
“Enjoy the bear, lovebirds!” The guy chuckled nervously, shoving the bear into my face before quickly moving up to the other end of the booth. “Hey, who wants to win a prize for their girlfriend?”
“Fuckin’ rigged,” I grumbled, handing Holly the bear. “You gotta do an undercover story on this or something.”
Grasping the bear with soft hands, she smiled. “I’ll get on that.”
“Where’s my prize?” I held her waist a little tighter. “You promised me a kiss, right?”
She smiled. “I did. I promised you two of them.”
Turning to the side, I gave my cheek a tap. “Come on. Pay up, princess.”
From the corner of my eye, I could see her lifting up on the tips of her toes, her gentle hands landing on one of my shoulders. She leaned in, lips soft against my cheek, and that was when I turned just in time. Capturing her lips with mine, she let out a squeal, her arms circling around my shoulders while mine stayed wrapped against her waist. The sound of her sweet, beautiful laughter hit my ears, and it made me pull her tighter to me as we kissed. My favorite sound. My favorite girl. And now it felt like I was living in one ofmy favorite moments. It was the perfect way to end a night that had me on edge since we left the motel.
Letting your walls down sure as hell felt good.
Chapter 18
Holly
When I woke up the next morning, I could immediately feel the warmth of the sun through the thin motel curtains. Fidgeting that little bit, I heard a soft groan in the air. Sawyer’s arm was there around my waist, pulling me back further, my back pressed right up against his chest. His nose was nuzzling into my neck, the sensation forcing a happy hum out of me.
Last night had been good. Good for Sawyer, good for his mom, good for everyone. There wasn’t ever going to be a miracle that would erase every last memory and ache, but it seemed like they were both moving on side by side. Together. The way it should have always been.
I heard a buzzing on the nightstand and winced at the noise. The room had been so quiet, so peaceful, so warm. I didn’t want any interruptions. It had been hard to get Sawyer on his own lately, and it felt good to just be together, one on one, like last night. The memory had me smiling. Those were the moments that I wanted forever. The simple ones, the quiet ones, the ones no one else but Sawyer could ever give me. I felt like the luckiest girl in the world that I was his and he was mine.
That buzzing wouldn’t stop, though, and I groaned lowly, fully ready to ignore the noise and turn around so I could press my face to Sawyer’s chest, but that was when he started moving.
“I gotta get that, princess,” he said, voice even more gruff since it was laced with sleep.
“Stay with me,” I murmured, eyes still closed.
His lips kissed the top of my head. “You stay in bed. I’ll be back in a minute.”
Eyes slowly opening, I watched as Sawyer grabbed his phone, rushed to put on some jeans and a T-shirt, and stepped outside. I grabbed the pillow he had been sleeping on, pulling it close to me and letting his scent take over for a second, all woodsy and masculine and justhim. I held the pillow tighter, a soft yawn escaping my lips.
I had slept good last night there in Sawyer’s arms, that little bear he had won me sitting right by the TV like it was watching over us. I was hoping we could do something like that today. Something where it was just him and me. I wondered what he was doing out there. Who he was talking to. He normally wasn’t so secretive. Time went on slowly as I stayed there in bed, holding that pillow tight to me until I heard the door opening back up a few good minutes later.
Sitting up slowly, I stretched my arms over my head as I locked eyes with Sawyer. “What do you wanna do today? Are you seeing your mom?”
“Nah, not today,” he said. “We didn’t make any plans for today.”
“How about we hang out today?” I asked, pushing the blankets aside. “Last night was so fun. It’s been a little while since we’ve done something like that. Are you hungry? We can go find a place to eat and go for a walk or something.”
Eyes softening, he smacked his phone against his hand. “Aw, Holly, I’d love to, but…”
“But?”
“I gotta head out in a little bit.”
“Oh. Watcha doing?”
“Just, um… stuff. Some stuff.”
Okay, vague. I found myself pulling my knees up, arms wrapping around them as I nodded. “Stuff’s important.”
