“Like where? With that bitch?” Kecia spat.
My eyes slowly crawled from Zoey to her. I was kind of surprised at myself for keeping Kecia around for so long because of her mouth. I would just blame it on being comfortable and the fact that her and Zoey got along so good, so it made it easier, but that wasn’t enough for me to tolerate her disrespect.
“Like whatever I want to put my mothafuckin’ focus on,” I spat back, rising from where I was resting on the arm of my couch. I needed to be getting to my manager’s spot.
Making my way over to Zoey, I extended my hand so that I could help her up. Hesitantly she accepted and slowly rose from her spot on the floor and came into my embrace.
“Look, I fuck with you Zo, but shit needs to be like this for now. I’m about to really be invested in my shit, so I won’t have time for women.”
“So that means you won’t be with her either?” She sniffled, looking up at me with teary eyes. “The girl from Dominique’s place?”
I didn’t want to lie because I didn't do that with women. I liked to be completely transparent with shit so the expectations weren’t there nor could they be disappointed due to me leading them on, but I also knew I had to handle her differently. I couldn’t just be an asshole about it.
“I’m about to strictly be focused on boxing, but she’s my wife, so she will be around.”
“Your wife?” Kecia scoffed. “The bitch popped up out of thin air, now you’re cutting us off for her ass?”
“Yeah, I am because I can’t run around town with random women when I have a fucking wife.”
“Random women?” Zoey whimpered. “We’re not random women.”
“I ain’t mean it like that.” I sighed. “Look, regardless how any of us feel this shit is a wrap. I got to focus. That’s what’s most important.”
Squeezing her one last time, I released her and took a step back then looked Kecia’s way seeing that she was still mugging me. She’d be okay, her and Zoey. They didn’t have a choice because I couldn’t afford for shit to go south with Kehlani, literally. I didn’t have two million dollars to give her ass right now, and hell when I got it, I wasn’t trying to give it to her just because I wouldn’t stop fucking with two females that weren’t technically mine.
“Whatever,” Kecia finally said. “Let’s go, Zoey, I’ll take you home.”
She stormed out while Zoey stay planted, still looking at me, crying.
“Go ahead, Zo.” I pointed toward the door. “I know y’all probably have shit here, so I’ll get it to you later.”
“JV, please,” she begged with tears rushing down her face. “Don’t do this. I—we can all be together, right? She can just join the three of us.”
“What?” I frowned at the thought of sharing Kehlani with anyone, even women.
What the fuck? I wasn’t even with her and didn’t plan to be, yet I didn’t want to share her.
“Naw, this ain’t that.”
Growing tired and impatient with the whole situation, I gently grabbed Zoey’s forearm and led her out the door before Ilocked it behind me. Walking her to the passenger side of Kecia’s car, I opened the door and told her to get in. She hesitated, but eventually got in. Kecia wasted no time backing out of my driveway. She was going so fast that I barely had time to move, but I let her make it since I had somewhere to be.
“Who the hell are you supposed to be to summon me somewhere?” I heard my father’s voice before I actually made it to Zach’s office.
I sighed as I sped up a little. He was dramatic as hell and if I knew him like I thought I did, he was for sure sizing Zach up. Bro was a li’l nigga. That wasn’t enough to say that he couldn’t defend himself, but it was plenty to say that he couldn’t fuck with my pops. He and Pres had collectively taught me everything that I knew about fighting.
“I’m Zach, JV’s manager.” Zach was standing with an outstretched hand as I slipped inside into an empty chair which my father ignored and eyed my uncle.
“Manager? Since when?”
“Well, Mr.—”
“I’m not talking to you,” my pops growled, causing me to finally speak up.
“Ay, you need to chill. This man ain’t did shit to you. Sit down.”
“I’m good where I am.”
He was still sour about the whole shit with Lani and Ms. Phyllis, and that was cool, but he wasn’t about to talk to me or anyone else in here crazy. At the end of the day this was business.
