Josef hadn’t expected her to sense the difference, that first time he’d helped Abbott clean out a city. She was a cop, and it seemed she could sniff out a criminal.

And she’d hated it when he’d smelled like one.

So, he merely took sips from the bad guys now, enough to get fully into their heads and see their crimes, and no more. He drank his fill from people not involved, or from shapeshifters they’d brought with them.

“Anything I need to know about the people you fucked?” she asked.

This was their deal — full disclosure because she wanted to know. The cop in herneededto know.

“Seven male vampires and two female. Three male wolves and one female. I made the wolves show me their belly and spread their legs to start — full submission. I fedfrom and fucked one of the men every day, and took him from behind after the first day, usually bent over something, or leaned against a wall. Also, I fucked two male cheetahs, but only took in enough of their blood to get fully into their heads.” He sighed. “We had to killallof the bears. It was a bad situation — a commune in the middle of nowhere in Montana. I fucked one bear in the hopes…” He shook his head. “They’d been the leaders, and I hoped the younger bears might be salvageable, but we had to kill every last one of them. It was nothing more than a camp to grow soldiers for the dark side — shapeshifters of every type, drawn there because of what they were allowed to do to the human slaves. We killed all leaders and over half the soldiers. They’d taken over an existing town, and every human was enslaved.”

Which explained why the actual supernatural police force — the Concilio — hadn’t stepped in for so long. As long as there was no chancefreehumans might find out about supernaturals, they wouldn’t get involved.

“Why were you called in?”

“I can’t talk much about it. Concilio secrets.” He reached for her hand and lifted it to his lips to give it a quick kiss. “It’s good to be home. Abbott’s territory runs like clockwork, with vampires and humans living in harmony — the vampires in the shadows and the humans everywhere, sunlightandshadows, as it should be.”

“And yet, you enjoy the occasional trip where you get to unleash your sadistic tendencies.”

“Usually, but not this one.” He’d had to explain how he sometimes enjoyed hurting people while he fed from them, and then it’d taken him weeks to convince hisBellulahe never wanted to hurt her — he wanted to taste joy and bliss from her. Never pain.Never.

If she enjoyed pain, it would be different, but it wasn’t in her to enjoy it. She’d moved past her many childhood rapes by always being in control during sex, and while she gladly let him take control and give her orgasms, she’d never be able to enjoy him hurting her.

Josef had worried about her getting a rape case, and how she’d handle it. She worked Major Crimes, and was specifically given the high-profile cases. So, he’d gone through the minds of the Commander and Majors, and anyone else involved in the decision of which detectives get which cases, intending to make it so they’d never knowingly give her a sex crime, but it turned out, they were already being careful not to. This didn’t mean she wouldn’t occasionally end up with one, because it wasn’t always something they knew up front, but the entire chain of command went out of their way to take care of her. They knew her strengths and her weaknesses, and they played to her strengths.

Josef pulled his love’s vehicle into their driveway and parked by the back door. He wanted her too badly to bother with the garage tonight.

“Inside, Lieutenant. I need you. It’s been too long.”

Nine days without her had been torture. His soulachedwithout her energy to balance him.

Nathan told him she’d gone to the Pride’s property Friday after work and had stayed a tiger until Sunday evening. Miraculously, she hadn’t been called to a crime all weekend, and she’d been the tiger all weekend. She’d missed him, too.

Ronnie started unbuttoning her blouse on the walk to the back door. Her vampire had a tendency to rip her clothes off and buy her more, and she had too many already because Josef loved buying her clothes as much as he enjoyed feeding her.

She’d moved in with him a month to the day after they met, and had never regretted it, even for a moment. Josef was her soul mate. Her heart ached with the loss of him when he was away too long.

They both discarded clothing on the way to the upstairs fake master suite. Their actual bedroom was downstairs, but neither was in the mood to get through all those security doors.

Ronnie ripped her own panties off as she stepped into the room, her impatience too much. “Hard and fast the first time.Pleasedon’t try to be sweet!”

“As you wish.”

She let him tumble her over the bed, the shock of it vibrating through her. His impatient hands held her, his feet spread her legs, and he entered her fast and hard, just as she’d asked. His thick cock stretched her wide, and a groan escaped her chest.

“Yeeeesssss.” Her voice was half pleading and half satisfied. She had him, finally, but she needed more.

He moved inside her, wild, reckless. Waves of pleasure flowed through her, but she needed to be inside him, too.

“Josef.”

It was a request, and as close as she ever got to begging, but he’d never make her do that.

Sometimes, he bit slow and she barely felt it, but today, he struck like a snake, and it was perfect. She wanted to be inside him. Wanted to nourish him. Feed him.

He smelled wrong without her blood in his veins. He washers. He was supposed to smell like her.
