Asher’s body hardened.
Damn it.
He didn’t utter a word. He didn’t move. Anything he said or did right then had the potential to get them both into big trouble.
“I’m sabotaging my own wedding,” Amelia said without breaking her gaze.
“You might have had a little help in that department,” Asher said, thinking of Holden and the woman in the bathroom.Don’t go there. He cleared his throat. “I kissed you, Amelia. If you’regoing to blame someone, blame me.”
The conversation had ceased being a game.
For a few minutes, it had felt like he and Amelia were two normal people. Asher hadn’t given the wedding so much as a cursory thought. Now it was back in the forefront, along withHolden’s betrayal.
She shook her head. “I’m not talking about the kiss. Or about what happened afterward.”
If he was going to tell herabout Holden, now was the time to do it. Tomorrow would be too late. “Whatareyou talking about?”
Amelia sighed. “It’s silly, I guess. I found something that belongs to Holden. A watch. I jumped to conclusions and accused him of having an affair.”
So she knew.
Maybe he didn’t need to say anything after all.
“I was wrong, though. He’s not.” Her generous lips turned down into a slight frown.
“Why do you say that?”
Tell her.
She deserved to know the truth. He owed it to her to say something. One of the most painful things about Serena’s infidelity had been finding out it had been going on for months and Asher never knew.
If someone else had discovered what was going on, he’d have wanted that person to tell him. It was the right thing to do.
“He and the woman in question are justfriends. Everyone agrees.” She sipped the remaining Scotch in her glass. “Now they all think I’m crazy.”
Asher closed his eyes.Do it now. Say it.“You’re not crazy.”
“I appreciate that, but my family and Eleanor beg to differ. So I’m still the winner. Cheers.” She held up herempty glass and gave it a little jiggle.
“Listen to me, Amelia.” He implored her with his gaze until her eyes grewwide and the color drained from her beautiful face. “You’re not crazy. You’re right.”
