Morgan turned the conversation back to her. ‘Is there any reason that someone would want to watch you?’

‘Blimey, they’d have to be desperate, my life is pants at the moment.’

‘You can’t think of anyone who would have a reason?’

She shook her head, but her eyes betrayed her slightly by looking up to the right, and the smile on her lips didn’t reach her eyes. Morgan got the impression that Natalie White was hiding something from them, but she had no idea what.

THIRTY-FOUR

Morgan still had no signal when she got outside to the car. She drove along the drive much faster than she’d driven up it. She needed to let Ben know she was okay before he sent patrols out looking for her; she couldn’t cope with the shame of that happening again. Once she was out onto the road she glanced down and saw a single bar appear in the corner. Pulling over she dialled Ben’s number.

‘Where are you?’

‘Sorry, long story, I’ll tell you when I get back.’

‘As long as you’re okay. We’ve got an arrest warrant for Luke Rigg, can you meet us there? When we get him in the van, I need you and Amy to go in and search his house.’

‘How long was I gone, what’s happened?’

He laughed.‘I’ll tell you when I get back.’

‘Ha ha, okay I get it. I’ll drive there now.’

‘Morgan, hang back a little while, I don’t want you going anywhere near his house, in case he kicks off. He’s not going to be happy about this, and he was particularly angry at you this morning when we interviewed him.’

The line went dead, and she realised that he must be in the middle of something. What had happened in the last two hours? She felt bad that she’d got sidetracked by visiting Natalie White. Something was going on with Natalie, she was sure, but she didn’t know what, or whether it had any relation to the case. And then she realised that she should have asked her if she knew Sally Lawson. They were a similar age, if they were both local then it was more than possible. Damn she could kick herself; she was going to have to go back at some point and speak with her. For now though, she should be okay, she had the security system and CCTV and hadn’t given Morgan a reason to suggest that she was in any kind of trouble. Morgan realised that Ben was going to be disappointed that she hadn’t even managed to grab him a sandwich whilst she’d been AWOL, she wasn’t going to live that down, but at least he was too busy to think about food for the time being.

She reached Hest Bank Road in time to see Cain escorting an angry Luke Rigg to the waiting van. She parked up behind the other two white Corsas, one containing Amy, the other empty. Maggie was out on her front doorstep watching, her dog Roley by her feet, his lead attached. She waved at Morgan who got out to go and talk to her.

‘What’s happening? Why on earth have they arrested him?’

‘You’re guess at this moment is as good as mine, I don’t know.’

‘They don’t think he killed Sally, David and Tim, do they? I mean they were good friends; he must be devastated by their loss and now for this to happen. I have your pie inside; it will need to be eaten today, Morgan, though or it won’t taste as good.’

Morgan smiled. ‘I’m starving.’

‘Well come inside and I’ll warm it up for you, then I’ll walk the dog.’

‘I can’t but thank you. Maybe when we’ve finished over at the Riggs’ house I can nip over for it.’

‘Well make sure you do, flower, you can’t work on an empty stomach, and I can hear yours growling from over here.’

Smiling, Morgan crossed the road to where Amy was now leaning against the bonnet of the car. Maggie turned around, locked her door then set off on one of her many daily dog walks.

‘You like her, don’t you?’

‘She’s lovely, and lonely.’

‘I never thought you’d have a soft spot for the old dears, but you really do, it’s quite sweet really. You’re like one of those eclairs – tough on the outside and all chocolatey and soft on the inside.’

‘Shh, don’t you go telling everyone. I like them to think I’m a moody cow, how did it come to this?’

‘I’ll tell you when you give up the goods.’

‘What goods?’

Amy’s mouth opened. ‘You’re kidding me, you took two hours to go on a sandwich run and never got any. What the hell have you been doing, Morgan? Did you even get any coffees?’
