She grinned. ‘I came here with a serious stabbing victim, but she’s gone into surgery and might be hours yet. Could you give me a lift back to the station?’
‘Rydal Falls, Lord that place is like a hotbed of violence. Yes, my love, but only because it’s you and I would hate to see you stranded here. You know Lancaster is a busy city, with a thriving university, and somehow we don’t have half the number of violent attacks you get in that quaint beauty spot.’
‘Tell me about it, I’m fed up with it.’
She walked with him until they reached his pristine white Audi.
‘And I’m hungry too, with a blinding headache. It’s been the longest day.’
‘That’s not good, if you want my advice. I can stop off at the McDonald’s drive-thru on the way and you can fill your boots.’
‘That might be a good idea, thanks, Declan.’
As he smiled at her, she realised that she might just be able to redeem herself, if she brought back everyone a Maccies. There were no fried chicken or burger restaurants in Rydal Falls, and they would be so hungry they wouldn’t care if it was cold by the time she got back.
FORTY-ONE
Morgan walked into the office with bags of cold, greasy Maccies in one hand and a tray of colas in the other. Both Amy and Cain fell to their knees, their hands offered up to the sky in prayer, bowing their heads.
‘Hahaha, aren’t you two the perfect comedy duo. Get up, you pair of idiots, I got Big Macs and large fries all round.’
‘I’m forgiving you for messing up lunchtime, Saint Morgan.’
‘Thanks, Amy, that’s great to hear.’
Cain had pried one of the bags from Morgan’s hands and was shoving a handful of lukewarm fries into his mouth. Amy took her burger and sat at the desk sniffing it before lifting it to her mouth and taking a huge bite.
‘You two are animals, don’t you want to at least warm them up in the microwave?’
‘Nah, we’re good and too hungry.’
She shrugged. ‘Where’s Ben?’
‘Probably passed out in the corridor somewhere of starvation.’
‘Amy.’
‘All right, he’s with the boss discussing what to do with the lovely Heather Rigg.’
‘Where’s Ava?’
‘With Sam and Tina, they’re waiting with her until Heather is released. Ava won’t go anywhere without her mum apparently, even though her mum is as deranged as her dad, poor kid.’
Amy relayed this information through a mouthful of burger and lettuce, as Ben walked in the door and stared at her in disgust.
‘Didn’t your mother teach you it was rude to speak with your mouth full?’
She nodded, then carried on eating. Ben looked longingly at the burger she was munching on.
‘I got you one too, it’s a bit cold though.’
‘I don’t care, thank you. How’s Maggie, and was Luke behaving himself when you left?’
‘Maggie is in surgery; I’m praying she’ll be okay, bless her. Thanks to Col, Luke has seen the error of his ways; he said it was an accident and he didn’t mean to hurt Maggie, and he was sorry.’
‘Blimey, we better get Col to attend all our raging, angry offenders.’
She smiled. ‘What’s happening with Heather?’
