‘Revenge for what?’
‘Something that happened a long time ago, maybe. Theo said they used to teach this stuff in Sunday schools, so maybe the killer was forced to go to a Sunday school, or they had a strict religious upbringing where the Bible was rammed down their throats regularly? If Luke Rigg’s advances were turned down by Sally was this his revenge? Or if his wife knew about his feelings towards her, did she take her revenge on Sally and her family? One thing I do know we need to ask both of them, and not when they’re together, is if they ever went to a Sunday school or if they go to church.’
‘What about Tim’s online game on the Dark Web?’
She let out a sigh. ‘I don’t know, this is all way too complicated.’
‘You’re telling me.’
Ben drove towards Hest Bank Road as Morgan stared out of the window and tried to piece everything together.
TWENTY-EIGHT
Luke Rigg answered the door in his pyjama bottoms and a shirt and tie.
‘Oh, I thought you were the delivery guy.’
Morgan smiled at him, by the look of disappointment on his face he’d been expecting something a lot more exciting than them. ‘Can we come in, Luke, and have a word?’
He didn’t seem as reluctant to let them in as previous times, but nodded and opened the door for them.
‘I have a Zoom meeting in fifteen minutes, will this take long?’
Ben took the lead. ‘Not at all, just a few loose ends we need to tie up. Is Heather here?’
‘No, she’s out shopping or meeting her friend for coffee. I don’t really know to be honest, she kind of leaves me alone if I have meetings.’
He pointed to the sofa, and they both sat down.
‘How can I help?’
‘Did you say you worked with David at the university?’
‘I did, not in the same department but we shared an office.’
‘David was an English lecturer, I believe?’
‘He was, a very good one too. The students liked his easy-going manner; he was very enthusiastic, too, when discussing his favourite books.’
‘I should imagine his death will be a huge loss.’
Luke nodded.
‘What do you teach?’
‘Computer Science.’
Morgan had to push her hands under her knees and force herself to sit straight, not looking in Ben’s direction. Before Ben could say anything else she smiled at Luke.
‘I bet that’s really interesting, what kind of things does it cover?’
‘It is, it covers all the basics really: programming, security, gaming, networking, web technologies.’
‘Oh wow, I’d have liked to have done that if I hadn’t joined the police. It would be so cool to be able to write your own programmes and stuff.’
She didn’t dare look at Ben, who would be questioning everything he knew about her at this moment in time. It was a tiny lie to keep Luke talking, she wasn’t remotely interested.
Luke laughed. ‘It’s fun, but also very boring at times.’
