My wolf itched for control and I released some to her as she twisted in a quick move that caused fur to pull from my skin.

It would hurt like a bitch later, but adrenaline was rushing through my body, not allowing me to feel it.

I backed up, lifting my snout toward my attacker. The wolf was much larger than me. I sucked in a hard breath and every muscle in my body locked up as the pine scent enveloped me.

It was as if a fist had been driven directly into my chest. His giant size wasn’t what had taken me off guard. My heart thundered painfully as a sensation of rightness fell over me.

Since my wolf was at the front, controlling things, she lowered her head, studying him.

His thick fur was perfect to rub against...

I crouched close to the ground and whined, inching closer.

He threw his head back and released a deep, terrifying howl. I whined, tail swishing as I inched another step forward.Shewanted him, but all I saw was a predator. Those wild eyes... the flash of fangs...

My wolf forced me to crawl another inch closer and rushed to the forefront, trying to push my smidge of control to the back as excitement bled from her. Oh, hells no.

I grappled with her, forcing her excitement to a standstill. She was ready to rub herself all over him and I couldn’t have that. No way.

No. No. He couldn’t be my mate.

Yes, Omegas had multiple mates, but there was never a sure number, it could be anywhere between two to five, or was it six? I couldn’t remember, but all I could think about was Camden’s position being at a disadvantage, and if he wasn’t my mate, that meant he was someone else’s.

My heart throbbed and ached at the thought of him belonging to someone else.

The gray wolf snapped his teeth in my face, dragging my attention back to him. As if he’d sensed I was thinking of someone else. He tensed, the area around us blanketed with apprehension as his gaze pierced into mine. My stomach trembled.

Guilt burrowed beneath the onslaught of aching need. My hind legs twitched and I sniffed deeply, wanting to inhale more of his divine scent.

His gray pelt shimmered in the moonlight and his ears flicked toward me as his head dipped.

That didn’t look good. He snuffled and a deep whining grunt rolled through the air.

His teeth flashed and he pounced, coming at me full force, his eyes glinting in the moonlight.

Kit

What the fuckwas Rowan howling about now? I sighed and rubbed my forehead with my thumb and forefinger. He knew better than to be making all that noise. We weren’t to howl—ever.

With wolves having been hunted from existence in Scotland, it was vital we didn’t bring attention to ourselves. Even if we were in the Highlands, far from civilization, we couldn’t risk it.

I’d waited for him to come back for hours and nothing. Looked like it was another night of me tracking him down to bring him back to the house, but he was pushing it.

The twigs crunched beneath my boots, and moss blanketed the rocks littering the ground. My breath puffed out in a cloud. It would be an icy winter.

The only thing I’d ever seen bring Rowan any excitement was hunting rabbits, but they had to be going under for the winter. The fucker loved chasing and playing around with the fluffy things.

He was feral, which was a... condition some wolves were born with, where they didn’t have a human mindset, instead, he was all wolf, even when he was in human form. When we were young, it was easy for him to be controlled, but as the years passed, he became dominant and unruly.

As an Alpha, it meant he didn’t listen to anyone that wasn’t more dominant than him, which meant he didn’t listen to anyone. As my twin, the only person he heeded was me, and that was only when he was in a good mood.

Hence our banishment from the pack.

I’d had a choice back then, but I’d refused to put him down after he’d killed three pack mates for challenging him. I could have brushed it off if it weren’t for his past mistakes. He really detested others invading his space.

I resented him for it. My position—being pack Alpha—down the drain.

A shuffle behind me stopped me in my tracks and I narrowed my eyes, letting my wolf simmer at the surface. He easily blended with my human mentality. I accessed his heightened senses while also maintaining control.
