Other pairings ... there were more human-monster couples?
“Have you encountered other pairs?”
“Yes ... there have been a few,” Issa said, clasping her hands in front of her.
And why did that excite me?
“Can the bond be broken?” My voice cracked, so I cleared my throat and forced my voice to lower. It wasn’t like I had a monster. Not now that Tenebrous would want me dead.
“I don’t know, why don’t we ask Vane?” she said, smiling up at where he hovered behind her seat and lifted an eyebrow.
His nostrils flared.
“This is enough, time to return.” We hadn’t even ordered. I scowled up at him, but he didn’t spare me a glance.
Issa’s teeth clicked together, but she didn’t put up a fight as she bounced off her seat. She tugged me back the way we came and released the café door in the gargoyle’s face. I peeked from her to him. That sniping did not seem normal.
She stayed quiet, seeming to stew over something, on the way back. Vane directed us to the pathway I had first gone through, and the orc allowed us through the entrance again. We crossed Nikita’s room, and a familiar voice stopped me in my tracks.
No way.
Liam stood up so fast, his chair tipped over on its back. His eyebrows were high on his forehead and his breathing was elevated. Was he about to cry?
Liam jolted forward. His hands cupped my face and dragged down my arms. He was much shorter than I remembered ... or maybe I got used to tipping my head back to look at Tene.
Another throb in my chest.
“I missed you, Bridget.” I opened and closed my mouth. What?
I had no clue what he was getting at after leaving me to die.
I scoffed. His eyes overflowed with tears, and his fingers pressed into my arms, but I gripped his wrist and yanked myself from his hold.
“Someone came forward after you were gone and admitted Leila planned it. Bridget, I’m sorry. I’m sorry.” His mop of hair fell into his eyes as he shook, lowering his head. “I was wrong.”
“Live and learn,” I stated.
“Everyone is gone, Bridget,” Liam muttered. A tremble coursed over his shoulders. Man was about to lose it.
I slapped his face, and the sting radiated through my palm. “Snap out of it,” I ordered. His comment left a lot to the imagination, but I was sure with him being here, nothing good happened to the village.
He sniffled, expression still crumpled. We had it easy in our little town. I hadn’t realized how much of a wimp he was. It never clicked that he was never on any raids or that he never left the village.
“I missed you.”
Oh God. I yanked free.
Nikita observed with her head tilted.
“How are you settling in? Have you decided what area you would like to work in?” she asked.
I shuffled foot to foot, looking her in her predatory, slitted eyes. “Yes, I would like to be a server like Issa.”
“Wonderful.” Nikita pressed her green fingers on the desk. “If you ever desire a change, let me know.”
Issa grabbed my arm and tugged me away. Liam tried to follow, but the orc in the corner of the room grunted at him, and he shut his mouth, dropping in the seat.
I didn’t pity him. Fuck him. I wasn’t that good of a person that I could forgive him. Even all our years growing up together hadn’t allowed him to spare me, so why should I?
