It exhaled heavily, puffing out a cloud of smoke.
A dragon.
It rested on its hind legs as it held me up with its oddly jointed hand.
This was how it ended.
TWO
BRIDGET
Except... instead of opening that violent maw, it snorted a plume of smoke and hauled my body. My arms dragged over debris, getting scratched up.
Vomit crawled up my throat, and spots dotted my vision. No, I couldn’t pass out. I blinked to clear my blurred sight, but there was no visibility through the thick fog as it towed me toward the Rift.
“No,” I shouted, thrashing, but the monster didn’t react. I dug my fingers into the debris, trying to clutch onto anything with desperation. Once he crossed me through the barrier, it was over.
My vision faded along the edges, and then I was enveloped by the dark billowing clouds that prickled across my skin until the sensation subsided ... we were on the other side.
The air felt heavier... My lungs struggled to expand, and a hint of metallic tickled my tastebuds.
Blue sparks floated in the sky, small odd-looking orbs.
I’d crossed the Rift and couldn’t tear my attention from the ominous inky barrier that stretched like a wall. The darkness spanned both directions and was much higher than I could see. Such a creepy and powerful portal that had rained chaos since it burst open.
Pressure mounted in my head, and I kicked my legs, but the monster didn’t react.
“Let me go,” I croaked as blood rushed to my head. Did he understand my language? My heel slammed something, and he let out a reptilian click before his grip tightened and he lifted me until my hands no longer touched the ground. My panties were on full display as my skirt fluttered around my face, exposing me. Fuck! I tucked the hem under my arms to keep it out of my face. There wasn’t much I could do about being exposed.
I swayed side to side as he held me far from his body, so I was unable to lash out at him, but even if I could, I doubted I made a dent in those armored scales.
A glowing dust particle floated near my face, and I swatted it. The speck landed on my palm, and I hissed at the burn.
There was the sound of scraping and then wind whooshing, then a thump.
A large dragon with a slimmer build landed nearby, his talons digging into the ground.
“Are you taking this one to the market?” The words were garbled, rough to the ears, and accompanied by a few reptilian-clicking noises.
Market? They had a market?
“No,” the one holding me rumbled.
“Let me go.” I trembled, huffing to pull oxygen into my lungs. It shook me again, causing my ankle to pop. He moved so quick I didn’t realize he swung his meaty paw at me until it connected. Pain burst across my temple, and I gagged as spots danced across my vision.
I slammed my mouth shut with a whimper.
Never mind, then.
A loud screech caused the one holding me to stutter to a halt. The movements made nausea creep up my throat, and hanging upside down was not helping.
The smaller one released a grunt, and his wings beat, sending a plume of dirt through the air. Dust landed in my eyes, temporarily blinding me, and I squeezed them shut, then blinked the sting out. A menacing hiss reached my ears, and the hair on the back of my neck lifted.
The burnt-orange dragon snorted and moved back unsteadily, sending me into a sway. Pressure mounted in my temples, pulsating throughout my head.
“I-I will gift this to you,” the one holding me said, jerking me forward and giving me whiplash. I whimpered, still not able to see what he was giving me to through my blurred sight, but the dragon sounded terrified.
I couldn’t imagine what frightenedthiscreature.
