My toe banged into a pebble and sent it skittering away. The sound echoed. The muscles in my neck tightened, and I rubbed them, trying to get rid of the uncomfortable sensation.
Think, Bridget.
Panic blinded me, but I knew better. I may have misheard or misunderstood. Sure, it was difficult to take that phrase out of context, but hewasa monster.
“Tene?” I called out after a beat of hesitation. My voice bounced around.
I licked my lips, and inched down, not shaking the feeling off.
“You weakened him.”
I screamed, flattening against the rock wall at my back. The eerie words were low and terrifying with how they held rage.
“He loathes you for softening him.”
It was the female demoness. His sibling. She was still here—but where was Tene?
“What?” I said, hands on my hips, trying to stall for time.
Claws sliced into my arm and side, sending blinding pain through my body.
I screamed and clutched my wound. Blinking through blurred vision, I wheezed, shakily cringing into the wall.
I couldn’t see anything, but I felt her presence nearing. My stomach dropped to the depths of hell when her breath caressed my cheek.
The punctures in my side and arm burned. I lifted my shaky hand to the wound on my arm, and blood wet my fingers, so I clasped it tightly, attempting to stanch the flow.
“You’re a weakness he does not need.” My adrenaline-riddled brain struggled to comprehend. “He is one of the most powerful creatures to exist, and you think you’re enough?”
Tene ...
“He wants to be rid of you,” she hissed. My stomach roiled. Her words filtered through, finally stringing together in my brain.
I bit down on the inside of my cheek to detract from the hurt spreading in my throat.
“Y-you don’t have to listen to him.” I forced out through a trembling voice. Her laugh lifted the hair on the back of my neck.
No. Getting murdered in a painful way wasn’t on my list. This renewed fire in my gut roared forward, and I drew my leg back in a quick motion, slamming my heel toward her voice.
In the same motion, I rolled, then sprinted with everything in me.
Her hiss reached my ears, but I focused on running.
Shit. Shit. I took the turn, following the path leading outside the cave.
The light guiding me outside glowed so close.
I had such a small opportunity of surviving, but it was nonexistent while in the dark. I cleared the exit, and a crack resonated behind me. It sounded like wood.
Fucking bitch! She smashed the bed base that had taken so much effort for me to build.
The weapon Tene left me, glinted.
I dove for the serrated knife I’d left on the ground, and my momentum rolled me a few times.
Claws sliced into my arm, and I squeezed my eyes shut, slamming the knife upward. It sank into the soft section beneath her chin.
I screamed as blood spilled from her mouth. Her eyes widened, and she tried opening her mouth, but the knife kept it clamped.
