The demon whirled, hissing. My heart thundered against my chest, and I lifted my hands.
“Sorry,” I rasped, attempting to step back, but I kept losing my balance.
My foot slipped out from under me, and I dropped to my ass, shoulders slamming into the ground. My movement took his legs out, and he fell on top of me, wrenching a cry from my gut at his weight.
Oxygen wheezed from my lungs, and his torso forced my legs to spread wide. My dress dragged as we slid.
The demon slammed his claws into the ground, stopping us from descending down the mountain. Thankfully, because the ground would have torn into my skin. I panted, clinging to him as I lifted my hands to his intimidating wide shoulders for a better grip.
His teeth flashed and the glow of his eyes flared brighter like when he slaughtered those dragons. His forked tongue flicked out and lapped against my throat. I froze. Fuck. This was it. I was a goner. My chest pumped, but I tried to calm my fluttering pulse. Son of a bitch, I was going to die.
His body jolted over mine, eyelids narrowing. I squinted against the light, but oddly enough, it didn’t hurt as if I were looking directly into the sun—It was more like looking at the moon’s enthralling glow.
His jaw tightened, and his sharp teeth flashed at me with his sneer. I panicked and pushed my hand out to provide a barrier between us but instead grazed my palms up his neck. He froze, entire body stilling.
Even with that evil look, the glow of his eyes dimmed, so it wasn’t as overwhelming. The joint at my hip twinged, and I wiggled to lessen the ache, but the angle caused me to press my pussy into him. I hadn’t been touched in so long, and I understood this was a creepy fucking monster on top of me, but my body reacted even though my brain reeled.
The pressure caused my eyelids to flutter, and I exhaled on a shudder as a wave of need swept over my flesh, pebbling my skin. Oh, shit. I had the oddest urge to grind up against his hard, rough skin ... but without my panties between us.
I gulped.
Wrong. This was so fucking wrong.
His lipless mouth parted, nose flaring. He sprang off me in a movement so quick he stumbled before he gathered his footing. Without him to hold onto, my body slid to the base of the mountain until my ass thumped against the ground. Fortunately, it hadn’t been too much farther and my dress had shielded my skin. The demon inched around me; attention fixed on me as he backed up. I brushed off my skirt, and he took a halting step away, tilting his head to the side. His movements reminded me of a feline staring at something they didn’t understand.
To avoid me?
I licked my lips, as he put distance between us. The hesitant movements almost cute ...
Wait one second. Cute? What in the ever-loving hell was going on with me? I thought a monster was cute?
By human standards ... he looked scary. Like a creature from nightmares. The horns, the sharp features, the glowing runes, sharpened teeth, and forked tongue were all meant to terrify, according to what I’d been taught.
I’d always been curious about them, but never in a million dimensions would I have thought I’d be attracted to one of them.
But here I was.
I got to my feet as he disappeared into the lip of a cave opening. My heart rate spiked, and I rushed into the copper-toned entrance.
Darkness encapsulated the space, making it easy to follow him as his glowing body strode down a long path before taking a sharp left, his tail flicking around the corner last.
Rocks crunched under my feet, the only sound echoing throughout the cavern. I needed to hurry before I lost sight of him, because I refused to wander this place.
His glow disappeared again, leaving me in utter darkness.
“Demon guy,” I called out, voice warbling. I cleared my throat at the lack of response. “I’m not really fit for the dark ...”
It shouldn’t have surprised me he didn’t respond.
I pressed my palm into the surface of the jagged walls, then withdrew them with a hiss. Excruciating cold burned my palm, and I shook out my hand.
“Hello ... demon guy?”
I tried again but nothing. The knot in my throat pulsated and grew. With my arms wrapped around my chest, I inched through the dark.
Everything would be okay. I just needed to get to him, and all would be well. Shit, maybe I should find a way out of here and run back toward the human side of the Rift. I was way over my head with this. I’d never imagined I would see monsters and experience what lay on the other side of the divide, and staying here would only result in me becoming monster food . . . But where would I go?
A brief flash of blue light had me running toward it. The tip of my toe caught on uneven ground, and I flew face-first into a wall. A cry ripped from my throat as my nose and forehead burned. I whimpered and cupped my face with my dirt-covered hands. Thank God I wasn’t running faster, or I would have broken it.
