Another wry smirk lifted his lips. He stepped closer and closer, and I had no choice but to back up until I was flush against the wall, tipping my head back.

“You talk too much.” The glib mask fell from his expression. This was the real man underneath the razor-sharp comments and smirks. Angry and unpredictable. I sneered, not letting him make me cower.

His eyes seemed so dead as they stared at me.

“If we had time, I’d fuck you so hard, Wilder couldn’t bear to look at you.” His whispered words struck terror in my heart.

My insides recoiled viscerally. What did that mean?

He gripped my nape, but this time the shivers that skittered down my spine were pure fear, unlike when Lucian did it.

Drake yanked me after him, and I stumbled over my feet.

“Where are you taking me?”

“All this fucking talking,” he hissed, squeezing my neck to the point of pain. I sucked in a breath, but he didn’t loosen his grip. We reached the end of the hall, and he pulled me through another door. The fresh, cold Oregon air brushed my face.

His grip didn’t loosen, and with a quick scan, I recognized the back of the pub. He was guiding me toward the forest. Everything about him put me on edge and screamed ‘threat,’ but all I could do was follow him.

This was a bad fucking idea. Nerves settled in my stomach.

I trusted those.

In a rush of movement, I thrust my elbow into his side. He grunted, but didn’t let go. His chuckle only made me feel worse.

“If you fight me, you won’t like what happens,” he mocked, like he wanted me to try.

I sucked in a breath, panic vising my throat.

Once in the woods, he led me over foliage until we were a few yards past the entrance of tree cover. The space opened to a clearing, and he came to a stop.

My mind raced. Why would he bring me to the woods? I couldn’t make sense of his motive. When I’d seen him, it was obvious he’d been expecting me. What did he want?

I searched the outline of the trees, squinting into the forest as much as I could but the moonlight beaming into the clearing only offered me a look at the immediate surroundings.

Drake guided me toward the furthest side and turned me so forcefully that I stumbled into his side. The barest light shone through the trees in the direction we came. As far away as it was, the fluorescent lights from the pub were somewhat a comfort.

“There you are. It took you long enough,” Drake said, staring directly at me. The man was a crazy bitch. Trees rustled to the right of the clearing, and a wolf barreled out. The large, dark-furred wolf with the golden eyes crept closer, his head lowered and ears pointed in alert. I immediately recognized my mate.

“Lucian?” I whispered.

His ears twitched.

I tried to pull away from Drake, but he wouldn’t allow it, forcing me to stumble back into his side. Lucian snarled, the fur on his spine standing straight up.

“Shift into your human form. I want to see your face when I fuck you over.”

Alpha Drake was a dead piece of shit. While he watched Lucian, I lunged at him, aiming my fist at his dick. He bent over with a harsh grunt, but in the same move, he backhanded me. My ears ringing, I thumped on the ground.

Whimpering, I lay stunned, watching wolves lunge at Lucian, attempting to pin him down. He didn’t let it happen, thrashing and slicing and biting. None was a match. Drake stepped into my view and pressed his boot into my throat. I gasped, pushing and shoving at his foot.

Lucian stopped fighting, his head whipping toward me at my sounds of pain, blood dripping from his mouth.

“Shift, Alpha Wilder.” Drake pressed his foot harder on my neck. I couldn’t stop my groan as the edge of his shoe pinched my jaw.

Lucian lowered his head, teeth bared, blood staining his bared teeth.

His bones popped, and he shifted with the blink of an eye. He stood, blood sliding down his chest. Two wolves had their throat torn out. Another three limped, but were no less aggressive with their injuries. They backed away only a few feet from Lucian, teeth bared and focused on him—ready to pounce.
