Thursday, October 13th

“What are you doing?” I ask, being woken up by the light of Adam’s phone. It’s the middle of the night, and he’s feverishly texting.

“It’s business hours in China. I’m talking with some partners.”

“Angry light.” I huff.

“Sorry, I’ll go to my office.” He lightly kisses my lips before getting out of bed.

“No morning run?” I ask, surprised Adam deviated from his routine.

“I was up for hours. Lots of kissing the ring. Feeling like a whore. Sticking my hand out for money.”

“So dramatic.” I laugh. “So, you’re still fundraising?”

“Yeah. We have all the verbal commitments we need. Now it’s time for them to show us the money.”

I sip my coffee, sitting on a barstool at the kitchen counter. “How often have you been speaking with China in the middle of the night?”

“I only do it when it’s absolutely necessary, and last night was necessary.”

He rubs the back of his neck with his hand. He’s stressed.Hopefully, this deal will close soon.

“While I have you.” A smile grows on his face. “Allison will send you a list of good attorneys. I’d like for you to interview them.”

“For what?”

“You said I’m never negotiating for you again.” He’s clearly amused with himself. “You need the pros to negotiate your prenup.”

I roll my eyes, not expecting that to take shape so soon. “What should I be negotiating for?” I flirt.

“It wouldn’t be very wise of me to give you an inside track.”

“But you love me.” I playfully pout.

“There are lots of opportunities for milestone cash payments like having a baby.” He winks.

I shake my head, overwhelmed by his desire to impregnate me.

“Do you have any plans tonight?” he asks after staring at his phone, likely receiving a text.

“No.”

“Perfect. We’re meeting Geoff Albert, his daughter, and maybe a couple of other people for dinner.”

“Sounds good.”

“It’s more of a business dinner than anything. I’m hoping Geoff will challenge the governor in the next race.”

“Real-ity, China, politics, trying to get me to be your wife and mother of your children,” I rattle off. “You have a lot going on right now.”

“If only we could go back to doing nothing but spending all day in bed at the cottage.”

“Ah, what a simpler time.”
