“Why June?”

A flash of panic zipped through Lake’s gaze before he could hide it. “I left him with Demitrious.”

Nix didn’t bother with the earbud attachment, hitting the speed dial number for Yejun first, since mention of Demitrious had him more afraid for the Demon’s life. Beck would kidnap West, but he didn’t think he’d hurt him.

It rang and rang and rang.

Lake was already off the call with the police by the time Nix gave up and tried West instead.

They were rushing down the halls, heading back to the next level where Lake had left Yejun and Demitrious. Halfway up the stairs, the call finally connected, and Nix halted.

“West? West, where are you? Are you okay?!”

“Relax, babe. It’s all good. Check the link that’s on your screen,” West’s voice came through strong and…excited?

Nix frowned. “Do what?”

“Nix.” Lake was holding his device, and once he had his attention, he came closer and angled the screen so they could both see it.

A video was playing, and in it, Demitrious was holding Yejun at gunpoint.

“Turn it up,” West told them with a chuckle. “You’ll want to hear this.”

Lake hit the volume button, and they listened as Demitrious confessed to everything.

Right before he tried to shoot Yejun.

Both Lake and Nix jolted, but when nothing happened, they relaxed.

“Got you, didn’t it?” West teased, and if he were there, Nix would have hit him.

After kissing him.

Because thank the gods he was all right.

The video continued, showing Yejun lunging for Demitrious and beating him. He was screaming for Nix like a madman before the door was tossed open and West appeared.

West pulled Yejun off just as Beck entered, blaster aimed at Demitrious.

“We’ve got him secured,” West said. “Don’t worry about June. He’s fine.” The sound of sirens from outside echoed around them, just as whoever was in charge of the building cut the ambient sound that’d been coming through the speakers all night. “Oh, good. The cops are here. I don’t know about you all, but I could use a serious drink. Also a fuck. I didn’t get to dick you down tonight, Nixie. Make it up to me?”

Nix hung up on him.

Chapter 34:

Nix wouldn’t let any of them touch him until he’d gotten a full explanation. After spending an hour with the police at Hunters Cross, where they were each questioned separately, Lake had finally pulled rank and insisted they be allowed to go home.

Demitrious and Hendrix were arrested, and the High Council had been tasked with overseeing their containment, so there was no chance of either of them slipping away.

Not that they believed either of them had any allies left after tonight. Even if others were working with them before, the video West had sent out to every device within a mile would have those people distancing real quick.

Now they were finally home, and Nix was sitting in the armchair waiting for a complete play-by-play of everything he’d missed.

Mostly, he was wondering why Beck had come with them, though.

“Who wants to start?” West took control of the situation and dropped down onto the couch.

The others remained standing, Lake by the fireplace, and Yejun by the chair opposite Nix’s.
